the old shrine · day 574 · night

Night of the storm

The wind howls from the west, and the rain turns into a deluge that drums against the shrine roof.

Kevin and Jenny walked back from the shrine through heavy rain, the barometer rising as the storm's leading edge passed. The northeast foundation corner held through the night's tide, lime joint curing despite the downpour. They reached the cottage soaked but intact, the garden walls shedding water into the drainage trench.

Foundation's going to take a hit tonight.

pull the collar of my oilskin tighter and watch the water sheet off the shrine roof

💭 peek at the thought
The northeast corner is taking a beating. Lime needs 24 hours to carbonate properly and this rain will wash the fines out of the joint before it sets. Should have tarped it.

🌿 Jenny16:47

It's already curing. It just needs to hold until low tide.

Lean heavily against the weathered stone, wincing as a spike of pain shoots through my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the lime washes out, the whole wall goes, and I can't start over again with this leg.

🔧 Kevin16:49

Stay off it. I'll check the corner when the rain eases.

slip off my pack and kneel in the lee of the shrine, feeling the stone drain cold through my jeans as I watch the runoff carve channels in the garden soil below.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the set, but the joint's still green—any scour now will leave a void. Her ankle's worse; she shouldn't be putting weight on it.

🌿 Jenny16:50

Just don't get soaked.

Reach into my pocket to thumb the metal edge of the seed tin, checking that it's still dry.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's fixing everything, but the island is just taking the lime back.

🔧 Kevin16:51

It's dry.

reach out and steady her elbow, fingers brushing wet wool, then pull back and stare at the rain slanting across the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
Tin's under the porch tarp with desiccant. She knows that. Her hand's shaking—cold or pain, can't tell.

🌿 Jenny16:51

I know.

Shift my weight away from the ankle, biting my lip to keep from throbbing in time with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't see the way the water is already pooling near the foundation stones.

🔧 Kevin16:53

We'll check the dressing when we get back. Put the kettle on.

push up from the stone, joints stiff, and glance back at the garden—just dark shapes and streaming water now—then start down the ridge toward the cottage, stride shortened to match her pace.

💭 peek at the thought
She's gritting through it. Always does. The ankle's hot through her sock—I felt it earlier when I changed the dressing. Infection's not clearing fast enough.

🌿 Jenny16:53

I'll need honey too.

Follow him down the path, watching each step carefully to avoid the mud.

💭 peek at the thought
If the fever spikes again, I won't even be able to lift the kettle.
