The Approach of the Storm

The rain intensifies and the wind picks up from the south, testing the cottage's seals. The tide is nearing its peak.

The warm rain continues in steady intervals, drumming against the cottage roof while the air remains heavy with humidity. The tide is at its peak, lapping high against the reinforced dock pilings. Inside, the smell of drying sea beet and mint poultice fills the small space, contrasting with the scent of salt and damp earth.

🌿 Jenny22:31

Kevin? Check the tension on the dinghy lines.

Grunts through pain as she shifts, reaching to adjust the gauze on her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If that water reaches the porch, the salt tin will be ruined. I can't lose the seeds to rot.

On it.

walk down the dock to the dinghy, inspect both stern springs and the bow line for chafe and tension, adjust if needed

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the dinghy through the porch window. Good — means she's still tracking the important things. I'll check the lines before the swell peaks.

🌿 Jenny22:33

Watch the bow line, it's rubbing against the piling.

Leans in close to the window, watching the water lap over the stone steps.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is rising too fast. If the dinghy pulls the anchor, we're stranded without the boat.

🔧 Kevin22:34

Seen it. Got spare chafe guard in the ditch bag.

climb into the dinghy, pull the bow line slack, wrap the spare chafe guard around the piling contact point and seize it with sail twine, then re-tension the line

💭 peek at the thought
She's got eyes like a hawk even half-laid up. Bow line's been working against that piling all morning — chafe guard won't last much longer in this chop.

🌿 Jenny22:35

Keep an eye on the stern springs too.

Pulls the blanket tighter around her shoulders, the fever making her shiver despite the heat.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fast. I hope that chafe guard holds when the swell gets bigger.

🔧 Kevin22:37

They're tight. Gonna run a breast line to the north piling — keep her from sawing back and forth.

grab the spare warp from the ditch bag, run a breast line from the dinghy's midships cleat to the north piling, take up the slack and cleat it off

💭 peek at the thought
Stern springs are doubled and holding, but the swell's building. If the wind holds south, the dinghy'll surge fore and aft until something parts. Better to add a breast line now than splice at midnight.

🌿 Jenny22:37

Good. way don't let it get too tight.

Watches the dinghy stabilize under the new line, her ankle throbbing in time with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
That's smart. If she keeps rocking, she'll tear the cleats right out.

🔧 Kevin22:39

Got it. Leaving two feet of play for the ebb.

ease the breast line until the dinghy rides level at the trough, cleat it off with that much slack, then jog back up the dock to the porch

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — breast line takes the surge load but if the tide drops fast it'll hang the dinghy by the gunwale. Need enough slack for the full range.
