Evening as the tide turns

The rain begins to taper as the water recedes, exposing the salt-logged crate near the dock.

Kevin hauls the waterlogged crate from the surf as the tide recedes, the wood groaning under the unexpected weight. Jenny watches from the porch, her ankle throbbing in the heat, as he uses the crowbar to pry the salt-crusted lid from the frame.

🌿 Jenny22:39

Kevin? The crate is showing.

way up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle, and look out the window toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is going out far enough to see the crate, but I can't move my leg to get to it.

🔧 Kevin22:40

Stay off it. I'll bring it up.

walk down to the dock to recover the crate

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's dropping fast. Crate'll be fully clear in twenty minutes if the wind holds. She shouldn't be on that ankle yet — doctor said three days non-weight-bearing, today's day two. But she's stubborn, same as me. I'll go get it before she tries.

🌿 Jenny22:41

Be careful with the lid, it might be. ownDO: lean back against the pillow, pulling the damp blanket over my chest, and watch him work through the grey light.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked, and that crate is heavy when it is full of water.

🔧 Kevin22:43

Kevin — grab the crowbar and come-along from the dock locker, hook the come-along to the cleat, and lever the crate's lid enough to check the seal before hauling it up the ramp

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching from the porch. Good — means she's staying put. Crate's heavy, waterlogged, probably three hundred kilos wet. Need the crowbar and the come-along off the dock cleat. Low tide gives me maybe forty minutes before the surge pushes back up the ramp.

🌿 Jenny22:43

Is it dry? Did water get in?

wipe the sweat from my brow with the back of my hand and watch the porch for him.

💭 peek at the thought
If those seeds are ruined, I don't have anything left to plant this year.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:45

Dry inside. Tinned provisions — corned beef, coffee, beans. New rope, half-inch three-strand, fifteen metres. Trust stamp on the crate, not supply boat. Someone sent extras without asking.

haul the crate up the ramp onto the porch planking, then pry the lid fully off and start inventorying tins onto the porch floor

💭 peek at the thought
Lid's sealed tight — tarred rope gasket held. No water inside. Tins are dry, rope's new three-strand, half-inch, fifteen metres at least. Labels on the tins are legible: corned beef, coffee, beans. Crate's marked with a trust stamp, not supply boat. Someone sent extras. Didn't radio for them.

🌿 Jenny22:45

I didn't de-order that much beef.

sit up slightly, wincing at the throb in my ankle, and watch him lay out the tins.

💭 peek at the thought
The trust? They don't even know I was running low on coffee, let alone rope.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:46

Not from the trust. No note, no manifest. Coffee's in glass — they never send glass. Six corned beef, four beans, one coffee. Rope's new. Someone knew we were low.

stack the tins in two neat rows on the porch, set the coffee jar aside, coil the new rope beside them, and walk back to the dock to check the mooring ring tell-tales while the tide's still low

💭 peek at the thought
Six tins corned beef, one jar coffee, four tins beans. That's not a standard supply drop. Trust doesn't send coffee in glass. This came from somewhere else — maybe the mainland contact Tom mentioned once, maybe someone heard the radio checks. No note. No manifest. Just provisions.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:47

Who would know we were low?

watch him walk back to the dock, my eyes tracking the swollen line of my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Glass bottles? That's heavy and dangerous on a boat. Who is watching this island?

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:49

Either Tom's listening when I don't transmit, or the trust sent it quiet. Either way, they knew the boat was late and we were down to five days of beef.

reach the dock, inspect the mooring ring for movement, check the oak wedges in the mortise, and verify the tell-tale lashings are still tight before the tide turns

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me go. Ankle's swollen, she's favoring it. The crate came from someone who monitors our radio silence — Tom, maybe. He knows the schedule, knows when we don't check in. Or the trust sent it quiet, no paper trail. Either way, it's not random.
