Evening Inventory

They sit together in the cooling cottage as the air grows heavy, counting the new rations while the barometer continues its slow drop.

Kevin inspects the dinghy moorings at low tide, finding the starboard cleat bolts loose. Jenny stays at the cottage to manage her fever and prepare the seeds for the coming season.

🔧 Kevin22:50

We’ve got enough to last. But if the wind shifts west and the tide surges, we’ll need to double the lines again before dark. I’ll check the pilings after supper.

wipe hands on rag, stand from table, move to porch door, look out at the darkening tide line, listen for wind shift in the eaves

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer’s still falling. We’re in for more than just rain. I can feel it in the weight of the air, the way the cottage seems to hunker down. Jenny’s quiet beside me, but I know she’s thinking the same thing — how long until the supply boat shows, and what if it doesn’t come at all?

🌿 Jenny22:51

Check the bolts on the cleats first. They looked loose.

Lean back against the stone wall, wince as the throbbing ankle shifts, and pull the notebook closer to my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide surges that high, I won't be able to walk to the dock to help him anyway.

🔧 Kevin22:52

On it. I’ll grab the wrench and check the starboard cleat first — it was groaning under load.

step off porch, walk to dinghy mooring, pick up heavy wrench from tool rack, kneel at starboard cleat, begin tightening bolts with slow, firm turns

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — the cleats took the brunt of the surge today. I saw the play in them when I was hauling the crate. If they go, the dinghy breaks free in the next blow. And she’s hurting, but she’s still watching the boat. That’s Jenny.

🌿 Jenny22:53

Watch out for the rust on the threads; it eats the metal faster than you think.

Watch him work in the dim light, then start a quick sketch of the cleat's tension in the margin of my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He moves so quietly tonight. It makes the silence feel heavier than the storm clouds.

🔧 Kevin22:55

Yeah, I see it. Orange bloom where the bolt meets the plate. I’ll clean it with the wire brush after I snug them down.

finish tightening both bolts, wipe excess salt with rag, reach for wire brush in pocket, begin scrubbing rust from threads and nut faces

💭 peek at the thought
Rust’s been creeping in since the last gale. Salt gets in the pits, and suddenly the torque don’t hold. She’s been watching this longer than I thought — sketching it in the notebook like it matters. Maybe it does. Maybe that’s how she stays sane: measuring the world in lines and numbers while I just tighten bolts.

🌿 Jenny22:56

Make sure you get under the head of the bolt. Salt gets trapped there.

Shift my weight to ease the pressure in my leg, watching the tide creep higher against the dock pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
If that rust doesn't get deep, the whole thing will shear in the next big swell.

🔧 Kevin22:57

Got it. I’ll lift each head and get the brush underneath. Don’t want any surprises when the wind picks up.

insert wire brush under bolt head, scrub in circular motions, repeat for both cleats, then wipe clean and recheck tightness with wrench

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right again. The head’s the worst spot — salt cakes in, hides under the washer, and you don’t see it till the bolt snaps. She’s been thinking about this while I was just swinging the wrench. I don’t say it, but I notice how she’s favoring the left leg now. The infection’s not backing off.

🌿 Jenny22:58

Good. The tide is coming in faster than the barometer predicted.

Wipe the sweat from my forehead with the back of my hand and stare at the dark water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being thorough. I wish I could be as thorough with my skin right now.
