Morning of Day 580

The sky remains flat as the pressure continues to drop, and the tide has begun its turn, leaving the sandbar slick with salt water.

Kevin struggled to pry a heavy waterlogged crate from the dock as the tide began to rise. He managed to wedge it against the piling to secure it before the swell could sweep it away. Jenny watched from the cottage, noting the dropping pressure on the barometer.

Kevin — walk to the waterlogged crate at the dock’s end, grab the crowbar, and pry it loose from the surf, dragging it clear of the rising tide onto the higher planks before it slips back.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer’s still falling, tide’s coming in—need to move that crate before the dock turns treacherous. Jenny’s quiet again. I wonder if she’s waiting for me to say I’m not leaving because I have to, but because I want to. Not today. Not yet.

🌿 Jenny23:15

Watch the edge, the wood is soft right there.

Step back from the jetty, shifting my weight off my throbbing ankle, and watch him secure the crate.

💭 peek at the thought
He's stronger than he looks, but the dock is going to give under that weight.

🔧 Kevin23:17

Aye. Got it.

Shift the crowbar to the inner face of the crate, brace a boot on the sound plank, and heave it another foot up the jetty, clear of the soft spot, then wedge a timber strip under the corner so it won’t slide back when the swell hits.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—the starboard edge has given way before. I’ll work the crowbar from the landward side, keep my weight off the rot.

🌿 Jenny23:17

Good. The tide's coming in faster than the charts said.

Wipe the sweat from my brow with my sleeve and look at the grey horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
If that crate slides back, the seeds are lost to the salt and the rot.

🔧 Kevin23:19

Aye. Always is. Hand me that rope from the dinghy—let’s lash this crate to the bollard before it floats off.

Take the coiled half-inch rope Jenny passes, make two fast turns around the mooring bollard, then run a clove hitch over the crate’s corner and haul it tight, checking the knot won’t slip on the wet wood.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching the water, not me. The charts are wrong again—this coast has its own rhythm. I should’ve trusted the feel of the swell, not the paper.

🌿 Jenny23:21

Make it tight. The wind is already picking up.

Lean against the way wall to ease my ankle, watching the first wave hit the sandbar.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the rope, but the whole structure is rotting under our feet.

🔧 Kevin23:21

It’s fast. Three turns and a stopper knot—won’t budge even if the dock takes a green sea.

Finish the lashing with a round turn and two half-hitches, pull the rope till it sings, then tuck the tail under the last turn. Step back and give the crate a hard shove to test it—holds firm.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s bracing—ankle’s bad, but she won’t say. Wind’s shifting east now, just like the barometer warned. This crate’s not going anywhere.

🌿 Jenny23:23

Let's get inside before the spray starts for real.

Pick up my notebook from the bench and head toward the cottage, keeping an eye on the rising water.

💭 peek at the thought
It's secure for now, but the salt is already eating the pilings.

🔧 Kevin23:23

Just securing the seed trays—be right behind you.

Scoop the two seedling trays showing fungal fuzz from the garden shelf, carry them to the cottage door, and drop them into the metal tin marked 'E' by the shrine, then snap the lid shut and follow Jenny inside, shaking salt from my sleeves.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s leading now—watching the water, not waiting for me. I’ll follow, but not before I check the seed trays one last time. The damping-off’s still in the pepper cells.

🌿 Jenny23:25

Close the door. The wind is turning sharp.

Sit heavily at the kitchen table, lifting my leg onto the chair to unwrap the mint poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in sync, I can feel the heat through the bandage.
