← Day 587

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Tide at Low Mark

Kevin is at the dock while Jenny is beginning her descent from the north cliffs.

The tide is fully out, exposing the sandbar and the northern shelf of the tide pools. Kevin has returned to the dock with a bucket of shellfish and is now checking the Yanmar's mounting bolts while the kettle begins to boil. Jenny, at the north cliffs, has struggled to pry open the rusted lid of the salt-crusted crate.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You look for trapped marine life as the water reaches its furthest.

🔧 Kevin07:37

Kevin — walk the exposed shoreline between the dock and the south beach, checking tide pools for trapped fish, crabs, or shellfish worth taking

💭 peek at the thought
Low tide pulls back far enough to show the old piling scars and the kelp holdfasts clinging where the dock shadows the bottom. Good light for seeing what's trapped in the pools between the rocks.

🔧 Kevin07:41

Kevin — drop the crab and limpets in the bucket, rinse hands in the incoming surf, walk back up to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Found a decent crab in the third pool — good size, claws intact. Two limpets large enough to bother with. The rest is shrimp too small and weed. Tide's turning; water already licking the lower rocks.

🔧 Kevin07:44

Kevin — fill the kettle from the tank, set it on the stove, light the burner, then walk down to the dock with the 19mm wrench to check the Yanmar's mounting bolts

💭 peek at the thought
Bucket's set in the shade by the cottage step. Crab's still moving. Limpets clamped tight. Jenny's not back from the cliffs yet. Time to get the pot on and check the dinghy's engine mounts while water heats — vibration at half throttle won't fix itself.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You pick a path path down toward the beach, avoiding the loose shale.

🌿 Jenny07:35

Jenny — carefully descend the cliff path, stepping only on the solid basalt outcroppings.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is pulsing, but the light is too good to waste. If I can get to the beach before the tide turns, I can actually see what's in that crate.

🌿 Jenny07:39

Jenny — walk across the damp sand toward the salt-crusted crate.

💭 peek at the thought
Almost there. The air smells like brine and rotting kelp. I can see the crate from here—a dark smudge against the grey sand.

🌿 Jenny07:43

Jenny — kneel beside the crate and use the crowbar to pry the lid.

💭 peek at the thought
It's heavier than it looks. Salt-caked and stubborn. I need to see if the seals held or if it's just a box of brine-soaked disappointment.
