← Day 587

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday at the dock and cliffs

Kevin is at the dock checking the dinghy's mast bracket alignment; Jenny is on the north cliffs sketching the submerged crate and driftwood.

Kevin spent the afternoon at the dock inspecting the dinghy's hull and securing the mooring lines against the falling tide. Jenny explored the northern cliffs, searching for edible plants and documenting the unique geological formations found in the rock faces.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You crouch at the dinghy's transom, eye level with the mast bracket. The stainless through-bolts are finger-tight plus a quarter turn. The 0.5mm stainless shim under the heel looks seated, but the bracket still sits a hair off square. You run a finger along the gap — uneven. The vibration might be here. You have a file, a mallet, and the tide is turning.

🔧 Kevin07:23

Kevin — file the mast bracket heel flat, check with straightedge, cut and fit a full-footprint stainless shim from stock, re-torque through-bolts to spec

💭 peek at the thought
The bracket heel isn't bedded flat. That 0.5mm shim only covers part of the contact patch — the bracket's rocking on the high spots. At half throttle the prop shaft loads the bracket unevenly, and the vibration transmits straight through the transom. Need to lap the heel or shim the full footprint. Tide's turning; got maybe two hours before the water's too high to work comfortable.

🔧 Kevin07:27

Kevin — wipe down tools, stow file and mallet, climb into dinghy, start Yanmar, warm at idle, advance throttle to half and hold, feel for vibration through transom and tiller

💭 peek at the thought
Bracket heel lapped flat. Full-footprint shim cut from 0.5mm stock, fitted, bolts torqued 35Nm. Gap's even now — paper-thin and consistent all round. Prop spins free by hand, no bind. Vibration should be gone, but the real test is under load. Tide's coming up fast; water's licking the transom. Time to button up and run it.

🔧 Kevin07:31

Kevin — shut down Yanmar, pull kill cord, wipe sweat, step back onto dock, coil painter, secure dinghy bow and stern lines for the rising tide

💭 peek at the thought
Engine caught first pull. Idle smooth. Advanced to half throttle — held it there, hand on the transom, fingers on the tiller. Nothing. No buzz, no hammer, no sympathetic rattle in the bracket. Clean all the way through the range. The shim did it. Let it run a minute more, watching temp, listening. Exhaust pulse steady. Water pump streaming. She's right.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You sit on a wind-blasted ledge, notebook braced on your knee, pencil moving fast. The crate bobs in the surf, tethered by a line you didn't place — someone secured it. Driftwood litters the beach: three long planks, a spar, a tangle of rope. You map it all — position, tide line, access route. The tide is falling. Two hours to low. Your ankle aches.

🌿 Jenny07:25

Jenny — make sketch: North Cliff Beach Salvage Map

💭 peek at the thought
Someone tethered that crate? That's impossible. There's nobody else here but Kevin, and he's at the dock.

🌿 Jenny07:29

Jenny — limp down the cliff path toward the beach

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is pulsing in time with the surf. I can't wait two hours; I need to know what's in that box and who the hell tied it down.

🌿 Jenny07:33

Jenny — reach for the crowbar in my pack

💭 peek at the thought
The salt is stinging in the open skin, but the sight of that crate bobbing there makes it sharp. Just keep moving, Jenny.
