Low tide recovery

You both meet at the dock as the sun begins to dip. The water is receding, exposing the salt-crusted crate.

Kevin and Jenny pried open the waterlogged crate at low tide, recovering sealed tinned corned beef, a jar of coffee, a coil of new half-inch rope, and a box of fishing line and hooks. They moved the provisions to the dock before the swell returned.

🔧 Kevin08:37

Crate's accessible. Grab the crowbar and the new rope. We'll drag it above the high-water mark before dark.

walk down the dock to the exposed crate, crowbar in hand, assessing the best angle to pry the lid

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's dropped enough. Crate's sitting in the wet sand now, not floating. Good. Means we can get at it proper without fighting the swell. Jenny's ankle won't like the walk back loaded, but she'll manage. She always does.

🌿 Jenny08:39

Don't force it. If the wood splits, the contents will be ruined.

Pick up the crowbar from the dock and walk toward the water, shifting my weight to protect my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just a matter of leverage and muscle, but the salt has already eaten the wood through.

🔧 Kevin08:39

Not forcing. Just seating the bar. You call it.

plant feet in the wet sand, crowbar ready, waiting for her direction on where to apply pressure

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Salt's eaten the joints. One wrong lever and the whole thing comes apart. Let her lead — she's got the lighter touch.

🌿 Jenny08:42

Start at the front corner near the broken plank—find where the wood's already compromised. Start at the front corner near the broken plank—find where the wood's already compromised.

Wrench the crowbar into the seam at the front edge, angling it to avoid splitting the crate further. </think>THOUGHT: The lid is fused shut by salt and time.

💭 peek at the thought
The lid is fused shut by salt and time. One wrong move and the whole thing will burst open.

🔧 Kevin08:42

Got purchase. On three.

grip the crowbar low, brace against the incoming swell, and lever steady upward on her count

💭 peek at the thought
She's found the weak spot. The corner where a plank's already stove in — salt's done half the work for us. Let the bar do its job slow.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:47

One... two... three!

Lean in and put my weight into the crowbar, pushing with a sharp, controlled burst of effort.

💭 peek at the thought
Please don't shatter. Just a clean break.

🔧 Kevin08:47

Moving. Reset.

slide the crowbar deeper into the gap, wedge it firm, and heave again — slower this time, feeling for the next nail line

💭 peek at the thought
Wood screams, nails shriek. The lid gives a finger's width. Salt crust powders out. Good. Again.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:51

Almost there. Just a few more.

Watch the lid closely, ready to catch any loose items that might spill into the tide.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being careful, which is a change. The sound of those nails popping is the only thing I can hear over the surf.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin08:51

Three left. Stand clear.

work the bar along the seam, popping each remaining nail clean, then lift the lid clear and set it aside on the wet sand

💭 peek at the thought
Three more nails. The lid's bowing now. Contents shifting inside — heavy, solid. Not floating loose. Good sign.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:54

Look at this... it's all preserved. Canned goods, rope, a whole box of fishing line and hooks.

Lift the lid carefully with Kevin to inspect the contents without disturbing the salt-crusted interior.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right. The lid comes free with a wet *thunk* against the sand.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin08:54

Coffee's still sealed. Rope's dry. That's the real find.

reach in and lift the jar of coffee first, wiping salt crust from the glass, then pull the coil of new rope free and test a strand between thumb and forefinger

💭 peek at the thought
Tinned provisions stacked neat. Coffee jar intact. Fishing gear dry in its box. Half-inch rope coil — fifteen metres at least. Someone packed this crate proper. Knew what they were doing. Salt hasn't touched the seals.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:55

Don't just stand there admiring the rope. Help me get the tinned beef and the rest of the provisions out before the next swell hits.

Reach into the crate and begin pulling out the tinned corned beef, stacking them carefully on the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
Coffee is a luxury, but that rope is a lifeline. I need to make sure we get it all out before the tide turns.
