Midday meal and radio check

Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table with tin mugs of limpet broth and the last of the corned beef. The shortwave radio crackles under the tarp, aerial shattered but functional. The barometer reads 1005 hPa and falling. Wind freshens from the northeast, rattling the shutters.

Kevin spent the afternoon inspecting the Yanmar engine mounts and prop shaft to find the source of the vibration. Jenny worked in the garden, re-securing the tarp corners that had been lifted by the wind.

Weather's turning. Radio's still got receive on 8 MHz. Might catch the supply boat's schedule if they transmit.

Sip the broth, set the mug down, and reach for the shortwave to tune the receiver.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifted northeast. Barometer still dropping. She's watching me over the mug, waiting for something — maybe the radio, maybe the storm, maybe the thing I still haven't said about Tom.

Don't hold your breath. The aerial is a disaster. You'll mostly just get static and ghosts.

Lean back in the chair and carefully lift the infected ankle to check the margins of the redness.

💭 peek at the thought
Let him tinker with the radio. It's a distraction, but a necessary one for him. My ankle is still too hot; the swelling hasn't fully receded.

Ghosts are better than nothing. Supply boat's due in six days. If they're late, I want the heads-up.

Turn the tuning knob slowly, listening through the hash for a voice or scheduled broadcast.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the aerial. But the set still pulls something through the noise, and I'd rather be listening than not.

🌿 Jenny08:33

Just don't spend all afternoon chasing signals. We still have that crate in the surf.

Reach for the notebook and sketch a quick, precise diagram of the ankle's current inflammation pattern.

💭 peek at the thought
Six days feels like six years when you're waiting for a boat that doesn't always come. I can't think about the boat; I need to think about the soil.

🔧 Kevin08:34

Crate at low tide. Radio after.

Finish the broth, wipe hands on a rag, and grab the crowbar and the new half-inch rope coiled by the door.

💭 peek at the thought
Crate first. Low tide's the window. Radio can wait.

🌿 Jenny08:35

Wait. Don't go alone if the swell is picking up.

Set the notebook aside and grip the edge of the table to push myself up slowly.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast. I can't walk down to the surf with this ankle, let alone haul a salt-soaked crate.

🔧 Kevin08:35

You'll slow me down. Stay. I've got the rope and the bar.

Pause at the door, one hand on the frame, waiting to see if she sits back down.

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle's bad. She shouldn't be on the rocks in a rising swell. But she'll come anyway if I say no.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:37

Just... call to me when the tide starts to turn.

Sink back into the chair with a heavy sigh, watching him leave.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always trying to be the hero of a small story. If he goes now, he'll lose the crate to the rocks.
