Evening before the storm

The grey light fades as the first heavy gusts of wind pick up, signaling the end of the still calm.

Kevin turned back from the dock and intercepted Jenny at the cottage door, steering her inside while he took the crowbar and notebook to retrieve the rusted tin from the shrine ridge alone. The wind was already gusting as he left the porch, and the tide was turning fast.

🌿 Jenny10:17

Kevin, get the heavy way over the dinghy now, the wind is turning.

stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle, and grab the edge of the table for support.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; a storm is coming before the boat, and I can't even walk the ridge.

On it.

Walk to the dock, unlash the storm anchor kit from the dinghy bow, and pay out the 50m warp as the first proper gust hits the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the barometer's been falling all afternoon and the wind's backed southwest. The dinghy's the only thing that'll keep us off the rocks if the mooring lets go. Need to move now.

🌿 Jenny10:24

Wait - I'll go after the tin by the shrine, you stay on the dock. Actually, forget the shrine - I need to check what's in that waterlogged crate. The label's mostly erased but I can feel around for anything solid. Kevin, I need you to watch the dinghy lines again - the chafe points will show when the wind really kicks in. There's something moving in there. I'll need to get it out before the tide comes back, but I can't manage it alone.

hobble toward the cottage door, grabbing my notebook and crowbar, then stagger outside toward the shrine where the rusted tin 'E' sits among the stones. </think>THOUGHT: The shrine is closer, but I can't risk the swell for a rusted tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The anchor's paying out but I need to get that crate from the cliffs before the tide races back in.

Crate's on the dock. Tin's on the ridge. You're on one ankle. I'll take the crate — you get inside.

Turn back to the dinghy, double the stern spring around the north piling, and seize the chafe guard with sail twine at the fairlead.

💭 peek at the thought
She's hobbling on a bad ankle toward the exposed ridge in a building gale for a tin that's sat there eleven months. The crate on the dock is right here, full of recoverable gear, and she wants me to watch chafe points I already checked two hours ago. The wind's not waiting.

🌿 Jenny10:29

I'm not staying inside while the tide is rising! Just watch the boat, I'll get to the shrine before the turn.

lean my weight on the doorframe, wincing through the sharp spike in my ankle, and start the slow, painful ascent toward the ridge path.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being protective again, but if that tin stays on the ridge, the runoff will bury the seeds.

🔧 Kevin10:29

Jenny. Stop.

Drop the twine, jog up the cottage steps, and catch her arm at the doorframe before she clears the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn as a seized bolt. The ridge path's slick, the wind's gusting thirty-plus, and she's one-legged. If she goes down up there, I can't get to her and hold the dinghy both. The crate can wait — it's secured. She can't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:32

I need to check what's in that tin - it could save us.

try to pull my arm free, then lean back against the cottage wall, catching my breath as the ankle throbs with the exertion.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right - I'm burning through my energy faster than I should.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin10:32

Tin's not going anywhere. Your ankle gives out on the ridge, I leave the boat to carry you — we lose both. I'll get it. You hold the lines.

Steer her back through the door, push the notebook and crowbar into her hands, and head out down the path toward the shrine at a fast walk.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not listening. Thinks I'm arguing about the tin. I'm arguing about her ankle giving out on wet stone with no one to carry her back. The wind's rising — I can hear it in the rigging. She stays, I go. That's the only way this works.
