Tin opened by lantern light

Kevin returns through the driving rain, soaked and shivering, carrying the oilcloth bundle from the tin. Jenny waits on the cot, ankle elevated, the storm lantern throwing long shadows. The wind howls around the eaves. They sit together at the table to see what the shrine kept.

Jenny opened the heavy rusted tin marked E and found twelve seed packets wrapped in oilcloth, all bone-dry and viable. Kevin recorded each variety in the notebook while she inspected them. The barometer continued to fall as rain hammered the cottage.

🌿 Jenny10:37

Sit by the stove, Kevin. You're shaking. Give me the bundle.

Reaches out to take the oilcloth with trembling hands and begins to unwrap the heavy fabric.

💭 peek at the thought
He's freezing, and the seeds are dry—I need to check they didn't rot in the salt.

Lid was sealed. Rust ate through the sides but not the top. Oilcloth bundle inside, bone dry.

set the bundle on the table, strip off the soaked wool jacket, hang it on the stove rail, hold hands to the fire's heat

💭 peek at the thought
The oilcloth's dry inside. Whatever's in it, the shrine kept it that way. My hands are too cold to feel the edges clean.

🌿 Jenny10:39

Thank combination. Now, let's see what grandmother saved us.

Carefully peels back the layers of the oilcloth to reveal the seed tin, her breath catching in her throat.

💭 peek at the thought
If these are viable, I might actually have a reason to stay here other than just surviving.

Tin E. Your grandmother's.

lean closer to the table, forearms on the edge, watch her fingers on the lid

💭 peek at the thought
Her grandmother's tin. The one she carried in her pocket. Same dented lid, same rust bloom at the hinge. The shrine gave it back.

🌿 Jenny10:44

(nods, running her thumb along the lid's edge) Shows a neat metal seam. No corrosion here, just old paint. (voice quieter now) All those years of promise, rolled into this little tin.

Gently twists the lid with the bottle opener, the sound of it breaking sealed like a promise. </think> Opens the tin and peers inside at the carefully wrapped packets, each one a possibility.

💭 peek at the thought
The tin's still sealed after all this salt and time. She was right to bury it deep. The seeds inside should still be viable if they survived the salt and decades.

Viable?

reach for the notebook on the shelf, flip to a blank page, pencil ready

💭 peek at the thought
Seeds. Dozens of packets, wrapped in wax paper, tied with twine. Labels in faded ink — tomato, pepper, basil, things I don't recognise. She knew what she was saving.

🌿 Jenny10:45

I don't know yet. I have to check for mold and seed-meal.

Carefully lifts the first packet out, unwrapping the wax paper to inspect the seeds under the lantern light.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't tell just by looking. I need to see the color, the texture, the way they hold their shape.

🔧 Kevin10:45

Take your time. Got the notebook.

hold the lantern closer, shadowing the table with my body so the light stays steady on her hands

💭 peek at the thought
She's methodical. Good. That's how you keep seed alive — patience, not hope. The wind's dropped a notch outside. Rain still hammering the roof.
