Midday at the cottage porch
Kevin arrives at the porch with the coffee jar and beeswax, setting up to re-seal the threads. Jenny hobbles up from the beach, bucket of limpets in hand, and sets a pot on the stove. The tin marked 'E' sits at the shrine, unopened. The barometer reads 1004 hPa and the tide is high.
The warm rain continues its steady drum against the cottage roof, turning the earth outside into a slick, muddy slurry. Inside, the smell of salt and damp wood fills the small space as Jenny prepares the harvest of limpets. Kevin watches the barometer, the needle dancing against the walls, feeling the weight of the falling pressure and the slow, creeping rot beneath the floorboards.
Don't over-melt the wax, Kevin. You'll ruin the seal if it bubbles.
Hobble to the stove and pour the limpets into the pot.

Wouldn't dream of it.
set the coffee jar and beeswax tin on the porch table, light the small spirit burner, and hold the wax tin a hand's breadth above the flame to melt it slow

Good. I'm making the limpets. I hope you're actually hungry and not just playing with your tools.
Fill the pot with water and set it to boil on the wood stove.

Hungry. Crate work took it out of me.
dip a clean stick into the melted beeswax and carefully coat the coffee jar threads, turning the jar slow for even coverage

Put the jar down and sit for a minute. The limpets will be ready in ten.
Stir the pot and check the heat on the stove.

Ten minutes I can do.
set the coffee jar aside on the porch table to cool, wipe the stick on a rag, and pull out the wooden chair to sit with a groan of relief
