midday meeting

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the sun reaches its peak. Jenny is leaning heavily on her side.

Kevin prepares a warm mug of water for Jenny and heads out to the surf to retrieve the waterlogged crate before the tide returns. Jenny stays in the cottage, clutching her throbbing ankle while beginning to sort the seeds in the tin.

You're listing to port.

Set the file down on the bench, wipe hands on a rag, and step out onto the porch to meet her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left side hard. Ankle's not right, or the hip's compensating. Either way, she walked too far on it.

🌿 Jenny11:15

It's just the swell today, Kevin. The boat is fine, I'm just walking a bit slow.

way shifts her weight to her good leg, gritting her teeth to hide the sharp intake of breath, and forces a weak smile at him.

💭 peek at the thought
He sees it. He always sees the structural failure before I even feel the wood rot. My ankle is a hot iron pressed against my skin, and the salt air is making the swelling throb. If I tell him, he'll stop working and start hovering like a mother.

Swell doesn't climb cliffs. Sit down before you fall down.

Hook an arm under her good shoulder, guide her toward the kitchen chair, and pull it out with a boot.

💭 peek at the thought
Swell doesn't make you walk like you've got a broken keel. She's hiding it — means it's worse than she'll say.

🌿 Jenny11:18

I'm not falling. I just need to get that crate before the tide comes back in.

lets herself sink into the chair with a sharp hiss, her hand clutching the edge of the table until her knuckles turn white.

💭 peek at the thought
If I sit, I'm admitting the infection is winning this round. But the heat in my leg is moving up my shin, and I can't ignore the pulse of it anymore.

🔧 Kevin11:19

Crate's tarped and tied. Tide takes six hours to turn. Your ankle takes six weeks if you keep walking on it.

Pour water from the kettle into a tin mug, set it on the table in front of her, and lean back against the counter with arms folded.

💭 peek at the thought
Crate's been in the surf three days. Another tide won't ruin what salt hasn't already. She'll tear the ankle open proper if she hobbles down there now.

🌿 Jenny11:21

The seeds won't wait six weeks, Kevin. The rot in that crate will.

reaches for the mug, wrapping both hands around the warmth to stop the shaking, and stares down at her way, throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Six weeks? I don't have six weeks if the red line gets closer to the knee. But he's right, and I hate being right more than the pain.

🔧 Kevin11:21

I'll go. You sort what's in the tin.

Turn, grab the crowbar from the corner by the door, and pause at the threshold. "Stay in the chair."

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the seeds. Wrong about the ankle. I can get the crate. She can't. But she'll fight me if I say that straight out.

🌿 Jenny11:27

Don't take too long. The clouds are thickening.

watches him leave, then reaches for the rusted tin of seeds, and starts opening the lid with trembling fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to do the heavy lifting because I'm a liability today. It stings my pride more than the infection stings the skin.
