Evening assessment in the rain
The rain continues to drum against the heavy tarp as the barometer continues to drop. You and Jenny sit together in the dim light, discussing the state of the floor and the coming storm.
The air is heavy with wet-season humidity as the sky thickens over the cottage. Kevin works by the dim light to prepare the Yanmar components while Jenny struggles to manage her fever and the persistent pain in her ankle.
The barometer is still falling. We need to get those seeds off the floor before the humidity spikes.
Reach out to touch the damp wood of the floorboard, wincing as the movement shoots through my ankle.

Seeds go up on the shelf. I'll clear the porch bench for the tins.
stand, wipe hands on thighs, move to the porch to haul the seed trays and tin E inside onto the kitchen shelf

way with the tin, Kevin. The seeds are already stressed if they get damp.
Lean back against the stone wall, pressing my palm over my hot ankle while watching him work.

Tin E too. Top shelf by the radio.
lift the heavy rusted tin marked E from the porch floor, carry it through to the kitchen, set it on the top shelf beside the other heirloom tins, pause with a hand on it checking the seal

Make sure the seal is tight. The humidity is rising.
Wince through a sharp pain as I shift my weight, trying to keep the infected ankle elevated.

Seal's rusted shut. Taping it.
peel a strip of self-amalgamating tape from the roll on the radio shelf, wrap it clean around the tin's lid seam, press it firm with thumb and forefinger, step back and scan the shelf — all tins off the floor, all above the joist line
