The Flooding Floor

The rain has slowed to a steady drizzle, but the floor inside the cottage is slick and damp. Water has started seeping through the floorboards from the exterior wall.

Kevin crawled into the tight space beneath the cottage to investigate the blockage in the water overflow pipe. He successfully cleared the debris with an auger, allowing the pooling water to drain back into the tank. Jenny waited on the cot, monitoring the floorboards as the moisture began to subside.

🔧 Kevin11:45

Going back to the tank. Try the auger from inside the pipe.

walk to the rain tank and crouch at the overflow outlet with the 12mm auger bit

💭 peek at the thought
The overflow's still blocked. Foundation's taking water. If I don't clear it tonight, the joists rot by spring.

🌿 Jenny11:47

Be careful with the pressure. If you snap the plastic, we're truly finished.

Crawl to the kitchen area and use aので to bail the pooling water away from the floorboards.

💭 peek at the thought
If that bit doesn't catch, the floor is going to rot through before we save the seeds.

🔧 Kevin11:47

Won't force it. Work it slow.

feed the auger bit into the overflow pipe by hand, turning gently to feel for the blockage depth

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Plastic gets brittle in salt air. But the blockage's deep — silt and root matter, not something a brush clears.

🌿 Jenny11:49

Try to wiggle it once. If it's stuck, don't twist the housing.

Sit back on your heels and watch the water level in the tank, waiting for any sign of a drop.

💭 peek at the thought
He's hitting something solid—maybe a mass of leaves or just packed-down silt.

🔧 Kevin11:49

Wiggle first. Then quarter turns.

work the auger with short, gentle pushes and slight side-to-side motion, feeling for give in the blockage

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the tank housing better than I do — watched her nurse it through three winters. The plastic weld at the outlet cracks if you look at it wrong.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:51

That's it. Keep that rhythm.

Stop bailing for a second to lean against the kitchen wall, watching his hands.

💭 peek at the thought
It's moving. I can see the surface shifting just slightly.

🔧 Kevin11:52

Got movement. Water's taking.

maintain the steady quarter-turn rhythm, gradually feeding the auger deeper as the blockage yields

💭 peek at the thought
Rhythm's working. Silt's breaking up. Water's moving — can hear it gurgling now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:53

Don't stop yet. Let it clear the whole channel.

Set the bucket down and watch the water in the tank recede.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is finally dropping. The level is actually falling.

🔧 Kevin11:55

Tank's draining. Need to check the crawl space after.

continue the auger work until the flow runs clear and steady, then withdraw the bit slowly

💭 peek at the thought
Channel's clearing. Tank level dropping. Good. But the real problem's the foundation — water's been sitting against it for hours.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:57

Good. Check the joists, I need to know if the rot has started.

Wipe the silt from your hands on a GR and stand up slowly, wincing as your ankle shifts.

💭 peek at the thought
The floor might stop flooding soon, but the wood is already so soft.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:57

Go sit. I'll check.

pull the auger free, wipe it on a rag, and head to the crawl space hatch in the bedroom floor

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle's worse than she admits. She's favoring it hard. Joists first, then she sits.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:59

Look for the dark spots where the wood is wet.

Sit on the edge of the cot, pulling my ankle up onto a pillow and listening for the sound of him moving under the floor.

💭 peek at the thought
If those joists are soft, the whole kitchen is going to tilt.
