Porch step repair at low tide

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the tide begins to ebb. Kevin has the greenheart shim and through-bolts ready. Jenny brings the notebook and a pencil, intending to sketch while she watches. The porch step's rotted mortise is exposed, the old cedar wedge swollen and useless. They have until the water drops far enough to work the base.

Jenny drilled through the greenheart shim into the stone porch frame, completing the bolt holes despite her ankle pain. Kevin steadied the light and caught the drill when she finished, then helped her to the bench to rest.

🌿 Jenny13:53

Hold the light steady, Kevin. If the shim isn't flush with the grain, the bolts will just split the wood.

Chisels out the decayed wood fibers with the mallet, taps the greenheart shim into the mortise, and aligns the stainless through-bolts for driving.

💭 peek at the thought
The rot is deeper than it looked from above. If we don't seat that shim perfectly now, the whole step will sag when the next storm hits. My own is throbbing in time with the tide, but I need to get this finished before the boat arrives.

Light's steady. Take your time with the chisel — I'll drive when you say.

hold the headlamp beam fixed on the mortise while Jenny works, mallet and through-bolts ready in my other hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the grain. Greenheart's dense enough to hold if the face is true, but if I rush the bolts through cross-grain it'll crack the mortise walls. The tide's dropping fast — maybe forty minutes of workable water before the base is exposed enough to drive the bolts home from underneath. My hands know this rhythm.

🌿 Jenny13:55

It's tight. way one more tap on the edge.

Trims the edge of the shim until it sits flush with the stone wall, then marks the drill points for the bolts.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being too patient. It makes me nervous. I just want to finish this so I can sit down. My ankle feels like it's in a vice.

🔧 Kevin13:55

Good. Holes true?

keep the headlamp beam steady on the marked points, mallet resting on my knee, through-bolts and washers laid out in order on the porch boards

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the fit clean now. Greenheart against stone, no daylight. The drill points line up with the old holes — she's using the existing pattern, smart. Saves drilling new mortises in the stone. Tide's still giving us room. My shoulder aches from holding the light steady but I won't say it.

🌿 Jenny13:57

Straight. Just don't let the bit slip.

Positions the hand drill and begins to bore through the greenheart shim into the stone frame, bracing against the sharp throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If I drill off by even a hair, the whole thing won't catch. I need to be precise, but my leg is screaming.

🔧 Kevin13:57

Bit's holding. Let the weight do the work.

shift stance to brace the headlamp against my chest, freeing one hand to catch the drill if it binds, watching the bit spiral deeper

💭 peek at the thought
Drilling greenheart into stone takes patience and a sharp bit. She's steady despite the ankle — I can see the tension in her jaw but her hands don't waver. The bit's fresh, cobalt-tipped from the supply crate. Dust is pale green, good sign. I should've offered to take the drill. Too late now, she's got rhythm.

🌿 Jenny14:01

Almost through the shim.

Pushes harder as the drill bites into the wood, gritting teeth against the pulse of pain in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is dense. Greenheart doesn't give up. I need to get these holes clean before the tide starts coming back in.

🔧 Kevin14:02

Easy. You're through the wood. Let the bit find the stone.

step closer, free hand hovering near her elbow — not touching, ready if the drill kicks or her balance goes

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing too hard on a compromised ankle. The drill's singing now — high whine means it's breaking through the back of the shim into the stone. One more inch. She won't stop. I've seen her work through worse. The tide's murmuring lower on the beach, giving us time.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:08

Just... there. Done.

Feeds the bit as it emerges through the stone, feeling for the clean break, and drops the drill with a clatter that echoes too loud in the quiet. </think> Sets the drill aside, leans heavily on the cane, and lets Kevin adjust the headlamp t

💭 peek at the thought
Stone's not forgiving. One slip and we're starting over. My ankle feels like it's splitting open. He's right. I'm through. Now I can sit.

🔧 Kevin14:08

Good hole. Clean break. Sit. I'll drive the bolts when the base clears.

catch the drill before it rolls off the porch, set it aside, then guide her by the elbow to the porch bench

💭 peek at the thought
Hole's clean through. She's shaking — adrenaline and pain both. The drill clatter startled a gull somewhere. Two bolts to drive, washers and nylocs waiting. Tide's still dropping. I'll drive them from the underside once the water clears the base. She needs to sit before she falls.
