Midday letter and garden check
Kevin sits at the cottage table writing to Tom; Jenny limps through the garden checking seedlings and tarp tension.
Kevin finished the letter to Tom and sealed it in the dry bag with seed tin E and the spare impeller. Jenny limped to the garden's edge, scanning the tree line and noting disturbed soil from a crab's overnight foraging.
You sit at the table with the dry bag open beside you — seed tin E, spare impeller, and now the letter. The pen scratches. You write about the Yanmar, the ankle, the rat, the barometer rising. You don't write about fear. The kettle sighs on the stove.
Kevin — keep writing the letter to Tom, one honest page at a time

You move down the rows on one good leg and a cane, testing each tomato stake, re-tying two that the wind worked loose. The pepper plants are holding. The lettuce gaps stare back. You smell ripe fruit on the wind from the woods — sweet, fermenting, close.
Jenny — lean heavily on the cane and look toward the tree line, sniffing the air.

Jenny — major the sweat from your brow and turn toward the edge of the garden where the weeds meet the forest.
