Afternoon at the dock and tide pools

Kevin is at the dock securing the dinghy and assessing the broken oarlock; Jenny is at the tide pools finishing her forage and heading back toward the cottage.

Kevin drilled the mast step and fitted the through-bolt, but the spruce spar split under the load and the oarlock bracket pulled loose. Jenny finished her limpet sketches, identified edible sea beet and samphire in the upper pools, and carried a bucket of boiled spring water back to top off the tank.

You stand on the dock beside the dinghy, the spruce mast vertical against the sky. The sheared bolt sits in your palm; the gunwale threads are ruined. You eye the spare hardwood and the drill, thinking through a through-bolt fix before the wind freshens.

Spare hardwood might work for a new socket, but a through-bolt with backing plates would be stronger. Need to drill straight through both gunwales.

Found the 12mm bit. Need matching washers and a nut. The stainless through-bolt from the supply boat kit should work if I can find it.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the tide pools

You walk up the beach from the tide pools, bucket in hand, the rising tide hissing behind you. The limpets and sea beet are a meagre return, but the garden beds are limed and ready. You head for the cottage to clean the shellfish and note the barometer still steady at 1018.
