Evening meal and mast repair plan

Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table with a supper of boiled limpets, sea beet, and the last of the flour stretched into flatbread. The cracked spruce spar leans against the wall. The barometer reads 1020 hPa and the wind has shifted to the southwest, freshening.

Kevin listens to the shipping forecast on the shortwave radio while tending to his thumb. Jenny prepares the tools for the engine work and checks the water levels before the evening settles.

🌿 Jenny01:51

The pressure is holding. We need to check the engine at first light.

make sketch: diagram of the float needle assembly

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is still growling despite the limpets. If I don't fix that float needle tomorrow, we're going to be stranded without fuel.

🔧 Kevin01:52

Pressure's steady. Wind's southwest — that'll push swell into the dock by morning. Engine first, then we see about the spar.

eat flatbread and limpets, wipe hands on towel, pick up the shortwave radio from the shelf and switch it on for the late shipping forecast

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the engine. The float needle's the only thing keeping us from having power when we need it. But my hands are shot tonight — that splinter's deep and the thumb's swollen. First light means cold fingers and worse work.

🌿 Jenny01:53

I'll have the tools out.

check the barometer reading one last time before bed.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the swell. If the dinghy isn't ready, I can't get to the north cliffs.

🔧 Kevin01:53

Southwest 5 to 7 by morning. Rain coming. Dock'll be wet.

set the radio down, pull the splinter from my thumb with the point of my knife, squeeze the blood clear, and wrap it with a strip of clean cloth

💭 peek at the thought
She's already planning the morning. Good. Means I don't have to. The radio crackles to life — German Bight, Humber, Thames, Dover. Southwest 5 to 7, veering west later. Rain later. Visibility moderate. That swell she's worried about will be building.

🌿 Jenny01:55

I'll get the fuel line ready.

sketch the layout of the tide pools before the light fails.

💭 peek at the thought
The swell is going to be heavy. If the engine doesn't hold, we're stuck on the south side of the island for days.

🔧 Kevin01:56

Barometer first. Then bed.

walk to the shelf, tap the barometer glass, note the needle at 1020 hPa, steady, then pull the blanket from the bunk and lie down without taking off my boots

💭 peek at the thought
Fuel line ready means she's thinking ahead — disconnect, drain, clean, reassemble. Smart. The tide pool sketch can wait. Her hands are steadier than mine right now anyway. Should check the barometer myself before turning in, see if the rise holds.

🌿 Jenny01:57

I'll be up at dawn.

close eyes and listen to the wind against the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is holding, but the wind is turning. If that needle leaks again tomorrow, I'm going in the water.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:57

…

close eyes, listen to the wind rise in the chimney, thumb throbbing in time with the gusts, and wait for sleep

💭 peek at the thought
Dawn comes early this time of year. Four hours, maybe five. The wind's already finding gaps in the mortar. Southwest swell will hit the dock hard by first light — engine work on a pitching dinghy is a good way to lose tools overboard. Should've moved her to the lee of the dock yesterday. Too late now.

🌿 Jenny01:59

Jenny — roll over and try to ignore the hunger in my stomach.

💭 peek at the thought
My thumb is throbbing louder than the wind. If I can't sleep, I'll be no use for the lathe tomorrow.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:59

… …

sit up slowly, swing legs over the edge of the bunk, stand on the creaking floorboards, and walk to the rain tank to check the overflow valve </think>THOUGHT: Hunger's a cruel companion.

💭 peek at the thought
Hunger's a cruel companion. The flatbread and limpets won't last us another day, and the rain's holding but the wind's picked up. Need to check the overflow valve before the tide turns again. Should've done that when she left the tools out.
