Sheltering from the squall

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the rain lashes the roof, bringing the recovered crate inside to dry.

Kevin pried open the recovered crate with the crowbar, revealing tinned corned beef and a dry coil of new half-inch three-strand rope. Jenny opened a tin of mackerel from the previous crate and started water boiling on the stove while the crate lid came free.

Got it clear of the surf. Tide turned before we could lose it.

heave the crate through the cottage door onto the kitchen floor, water pooling around the boards, then lean the crowbar against the wall and wipe salt from my hands on my trousers

💭 peek at the thought
The crate's heavier than it looked from the dock — waterlogged greenheart and salt. My forearms are burning from the haul up the beach. Jenny's quiet beside me, but her eyes keep tracking to the tin marked E on the porch. She's waiting to see what I do with it.

🌿 Jenny04:59

Good. Now leave the crowbar where it is so you don't trip over it.

Lean against the kitchen table and look at the crate, then reach for the tinned mackerel.

💭 peek at the thought
He's dripping all over the floor, but he's got the crate. I can't even be annoyed. I'm starving and my leg is humming.

🔧 Kevin04:59

Mackerel's from the last crate. Still sealed.

pull a knife from the drawer, flip it in my hand, and hold it out handle-first toward her

💭 peek at the thought
She's managing me again. Subtle. The crowbar's fine where it is — I put it there. But the mackerel tin in her hand says she's hungry, and that's better than the alternative.

🌿 Jenny05:00

I'll handle it. Go get the pot started.

Take the knife and pry the tin open, then move to the wood stove to boil some water.

💭 peek at the thought
At least there's protein. I'm so low I can feel it.

🔧 Kevin05:00

Right.

set the dented pot on the stove top, pour from the tank tap until it's three-quarters full, then turn to the crate and pry the lid boards with the knife blade

💭 peek at the thought
She's running the stove. Fine. Less talking, more doing — that's the rhythm that works. Water's full in the tank, wood's dry in the box. I'll get the pot on and check the crate contents while she handles the tin.

🌿 Jenny05:01

Use the crowbar for the crate, Kevin. Don't ruin the knife.

Slice the mackerel onto a clean plate and sit at the table, watching the water start to simmer.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to snap that blade. The wood is soaked through.

🔧 Kevin05:02

Kevin — set the knife down on the table beside her plate, pick up the crowbar, and wedge the curved end under the crate lid, levering slow to avoid splintering the greenheart

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Knife's for eating, crowbar's for prying. Habit from the engine room — wrong tool for the job gets you hurt or breaks the tool.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:03

Thank you.

Take a bite of the fish and watch the crowbar give way.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally using the right tool. My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain.

🔧 Kevin05:04

Greenheart planks. Look sound.

lift the lid clear and set it against the wall, then reach into the crate and pull out the first tin — corned beef, label faded but sealed — followed by a coil of new half-inch three-strand rope, dry and clean

💭 peek at the thought
Lid gives. Salt crust crumbles at the edges. Greenheart planks — good wood, dense, oil-rich. Smells like tar and diesel and something sweeter underneath. Preserved provisions, she said. Rope. Maybe more.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:05

Put the rope on the table so it doesn't get wet.

Reach for the tin of beef and wait for the water to boil.

💭 peek at the thought
Corned beef. And rope. We need that for the dock repairs once this rain stops.
