← Day 605

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday work at dock and cliffs

Kevin is at the dock inspecting the mast epoxy and preparing to recover the floating crate; Jenny is on the north cliffs taking soil pH readings and sketching sea-beet morphology.

Kevin waits for the tide to drop at the dock to recover the crate while checking the epoxy on the mast spar. Jenny continues her work on the cliffs, recording soil pH and sketching as a sudden squall rolls in.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand on the slick dock planks, rain sheeting off your oilskin. The spruce mast spar leans against the piling, its epoxy patch still tacky to the touch. The bracket bolts are finger-tight only — alignment needs checking before the cure sets. Beyond the dock, the wooden crate rides the swell, half-submerged, its blurred labels mocking you. The crowbar lies at your feet.

🔧 Kevin04:53

Kevin — pick up the crowbar, walk the spar back to the cottage porch, lean it under the tarp where it's drier. Check the epoxy with a thumbnail, then sit with the radio and the letter to Tom while the tide drops.

💭 peek at the thought
Epoxy won't cure proper in this damp. Bracket's finger-tight — if the front hits before I true it, the mast'll twist under sail. Crate's mocking me but the tide's high. Wait for the turn.

🔧 Kevin04:56

Kevin — walk back to the dock, crowbar in hand. Stand at the seaward end and watch the water recede, timing the crate's dance in the swell.

💭 peek at the thought
Spar's under the porch tarp. Epoxy still tacky — thumbnail leaves a mark. Bracket alignment can wait till it firms. Tide's turning. Crate'll be reachable in an hour, maybe less. Rain's easing. Good.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You crouch at the first cairn on the north ridge, rain blurring the pH strip in your fingers. The Carex transect markers are clear — three stone cairns along the elevation gradient. You dip the strip in the soil slurry, count seconds, match the colour: 5.6, untreated. The sea-beet clusters here are stunted, salt glands dense on the leaf margins. You sketch fast, pencil tearing the wet paper.

🌿 Jenny04:51

Stay focused, Jenny. Just one more row.

Record pH 5.6 in the soil log and sketch the stunted leaf morphology of the sea-beet.

💭 peek at the thought
The acidity is dropping again; grandmother's seeds will never take this soil unless I find more lime.

🌿 Jenny04:55

Jenny — wipe the condensation off the notebook page and tuck the pencil into the waterproof casing.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up; I can feel the pressure shift in my joints before the way.
