The Afternoon Swell

The rain shows no sign of waning, and the tide is nearing its peak. The dock is submerged, and the wind is picking up.

The heavy air hangs still as the barometer begins to drop, signaling a change in weather. Kevin focuses on checking the cottage for the coming storm while Jenny manages the persistent pain in her ankle under the humid heat.

🌿 Jenny07:34

Kevin, the dock's under — I need to check the spring intake before it floods. And the seed tin's getting water damage if this rain keeps up.

make emergency shelter: tarp over cottage west wall with timber battens grab seed tin E and dry bag from porch move to spring to check water source security apply fresh poultice to ankle with sea beet and mint

💭 peek at the thought
The dock is underwater and rising fast — the tide is coming in with that NE swell, and I need to get to the spring before it gets cut off. My ankle's throbbing worse from the damp, but I can't let the rain flood the cottage or wash away the last of grandmother's seeds. Kevin won't hear me over the wind anyway.

I'll get the tin and the bag. You take the porch side — I'll meet you at the spring.

grab seed tin E and dry bag from porch, move to spring to check water source security

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's already licking the dock planks and the wind's backing west — she shouldn't be out there alone on that ankle, not with the spring path turning to slick rock. But she's already decided. Best I move with her.

🌿 Jenny07:35

Be careful, the rocks are slick.

limp toward the porch edge, weight on the good leg; wrap ankle with sea beet- Strategy poultice and clean cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast for me. If the spring intake isages with silt, the whole system is compromised. My ankle feels like it's being squeezed by a fist, but I have to move.

🔧 Kevin07:36

Tin's heavy. I've got it. Just watch your placement.

grab seed tin E and dry bag from porch, follow Jenny toward the spring

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left leg hard, breath catching each step. The poultice needs changing but not out here in the driving rain. I'll carry both loads and she can focus on footing.

🌿 Jenny07:37

Don't run, the mud is shifting.

navigate the slope toward the spring, pausing to catch my breath; inspect the intake for debris.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's being helpful, but he doesn't see the way the water is pooling. If the intake clogs, we're drinking salt by tomorrow. I need to see the pressure levels before it gets worse.

🔧 Kevin07:38

Slow. I'm right behind you.

follow Jenny up the slope to the spring, keeping a hand ready to steady her, scan the intake for blockage as we approach

💭 peek at the thought
The slope's gone to grease clay under the sheet rain. One wrong footing and she goes down hard. I'm carrying both tins but my hands are free enough to catch her if she slips. The intake screen'll be choked with leaf litter and spruce needles by now.

🌿 Jenny07:39

Look at the flow. It's already slowing down.

kneel by the spring intake, wincing at the pressure; clear the leaves and grit from the opening.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is too dark. If the silt gets into the filter, I'll never get it back out. My ankle is screaming with every step, but I have to check the flow.
