Morning assessment and radio watch
Kevin and Jenny sit on the cottage porch under a tarp as warm rain falls in sheets. Kevin checks Jenny's ankle — red streaks climbing toward her calf, skin hot to touch — while she presses a cold pack wrapped in cloth against the swelling. The shortwave radio crackles with static beside them, the shattered aerial sheltered under the same tarp, as Kevin prepares to call the supply boat at 0800.
The morning rain continues in steady, warm bursts, drumming against the roof of the cottage. The barometer shows a slow drop to 998 hPa, suggesting the weather may turn despite the dry season heat. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing more of the rocky shallows near the dock.
Radio check coming up. You want water or broth first?
Check the cold pack temperature against her skin, then reach for the shortwave to warm up the tubes before the 0800 schedule.

Just the water, Kevin.
Tighten the wrap on the ankle and watch the rain wash over the garden weeds.

Right.
Pour water from the canteen into a tin mug, hold it out to her, then turn to the radio and flip the power switch — tubes glowing faint, warming up.

Check the frequency first.
Take a slow sip of the water and reach for my sketchbook to sketch the way the rain is hitting the leaves.
