Morning Radio Check

The rain tapers slightly as the 0800 window approaches. The radio crackles with life as Kevin tunes the frequency. The tide is out far enough to see what the island has revealed at the low water.

Kevin radioed the supply boat on channel sixteen but heard only static and a fragment of mainland news. He walked the culvert line past the dock, finding the outflow clear but the tide pulling fast. Jenny remained on the porch sketching the receding water, her ankle throbbing, and noted the barometer still falling.

🌿 Jenny08:16

The pressure is dropping again. I need to check the culvert before the tide turns.

stand up slowly, wincing as weight shifts on the ankle, and walk to the porch to watch the water.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in five days, I'll run out of clean gauze for the poultice.

Radio check at 0800. I'll call the boat, you stay off that leg.

turn on the shortwave radio, tune to the supply boat frequency, and key the mic for the scheduled check

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's fallen two millibars since I checked at first light. She shouldn't be walking on that ankle, not with the streaks tracking upward. But she'll go anyway — she always goes. I'll run the radio check first, then follow her to the culvert. The tide's low enough to see the outflow now.

I'll be back in twenty minutes. The tide is fast.

lean against the whitewashed doorframe, watching the grey water pull the kelp from the rocks.

💭 peek at the thought
way thinks I can just sit here, but the north culvert won't clear itself.

Channel sixteen. Supply boat Sorrel Island, over.

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes she says. The tide's running hard on the ebb — she'll have maybe forty minutes before the culvert's submerged again. Her ankle won't hold that long on wet rock. I'll make the call quick and meet her there.

🌿 Jenny08:23

Jenny — listen to the static on the radio, my hand gripping the wooden doorframe.

💭 peek at the thought
If they don't answer, I'm going to lose my mind.

🔧 Kevin08:23

Nothing heard. I'm walking the culvert line. Stay on the porch.

step off the porch and walk down the path toward the dock and culvert, scanning the outflow as I go

💭 peek at the thought
Static. Same as yesterday. Same as the day before. The boat's six days out if they keep to schedule, but the barometer says different — this low's deepening. I'll try the coast guard frequency after the scheduled window closes. First, get eyes on the culvert while the water's down.

🌿 Jenny08:25

Watch out for the debris line!

sit on the porch step, pulling my sketchbook from my pocket to draw the way the tide recedes over the rocks.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so protective, but if that culvert is blocked, the garden owns.

🔧 Kevin08:25

Seen it. Back in ten.

walk past the dock toward the culvert outlet, picking through the wrack line, eyes on the pipe mouth where it empties onto the shore

💭 peek at the thought
Debris line's new since yesterday — storm wrack stacked high on the south piling. Means the surge came up over the dock boards. Culvert's fifty metres further on. She's sketching instead of watching her ankle swell. I'll check the pipe and be back before the water turns.
