Midday engine check and ankle care
Kevin is at the cottage running the Yanmar at idle to listen for the impeller whine; Jenny is at the hilltop surveying the north culvert drainage from above.
Kevin swapped the Yanmar's raw water impeller using the spare from the dry bag, reassembled the pump, and primed the sea strainer. Jenny cleared the north culvert of debris with the crowbar and confirmed water flow. A rat was discovered in the pantry at the cottage.
You pull the starter cord and the Yanmar catches on the second pull, settling into a rough idle. A high thin whine rises from the impeller housing — louder than before. You shut it down, pull the spare impeller from the dry bag, and lay tools out on the dock planking.
Kevin — pull Yanmar raw water pump cover, inspect impeller housing, swap in spare impeller from dry bag

You climb the path to the hilltop, each step a careful negotiation with your ankle, and look down the drainage line toward the north culvert. The outflow runs clear, but a tangle of driftwood and plastic is piling against the grate — new since the last storm. The wind gusts, and the barometer in your pocket reads lower still.
Jenny — walk down to the culvert and use the crowbar to clear the debris.

Jenny — wipe the mud from the waybar and check the flow again.
