The calm before the surge

The light lightens as the sky turns bruised purple, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the dust of the cottage roof.

Kevin secured the dinghy warps against the rising tide and strengthening wind, then returned to the cottage. Jenny monitored her ankle infection, noting persistent red streaks despite the sea beet poultice and completed antibiotic course.

Kevin! Check the wayhy lines! The wind is turning!

Reach for the notebook with shaking hands and brace myself against the throbbing pain in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If that storm hits now, the seeds on the slope will be way away.

On it. Get back inside.

sprint to the dock, checking dinghy warps and storm anchor as I move

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing hard. She's on the porch — shouldn't be upright. Need to get her inside and the dinghy secured before the main front hits.

🌿 Jenny11:05

Just make sure the boat stays! The tide is too high!

pull the door shut and press the cold sea beet poultice against the heat of my calf.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't see the way the streaks are moving. They're racing up my leg.

🔧 Kevin11:05

Kevin — reach the dinghy, grab the stern spring, pay out two metres of scope and cleat it off with extra turns, then check the bow line for chafe at the bow eye

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's pushing the dinghy hard against the pilings. Warps are doubled but the chafe points will burn through in this chop. Need to pay out more scope on the stern spring and check the bow line slack.

🌿 Jenny11:07

Jenny — watch him through the window, clutching the way until my knuckles turn white.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up. If the dinghy goes, I'm stuck here with this rot.

🔧 Kevin11:07

Kevin — pull the half-inch three-strand from my pocket, feed it through the bow chock as a sleeve, re-thread the bow line inside it, take up the slack and make it fast on the cleat with a proper hitch

💭 peek at the thought
Bow line's sawing on the chock. One more gust and it parts. Need to slip a length of the new rope through as a chafe guard and re-cleat. Hands are cold, fingers stiff.

🌿 Jenny11:09

way back! The sky is falling in!

sink back onto the cot and watch the red lines pulse in the light.

💭 peek at the thought
He's good with the lines, but he's not looking at the fire in my blood.

🔧 Kevin11:09

Kevin — cast a last look at the warps, turn and run for the cottage, bursting through the porch door dripping

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the sky. Pressure's dropping like a stone. That's the third gust in a minute — forty, fifty knots easy. Dinghy's riding hard but holding. Need to get back to her before the rain turns horizontal.
