Evening at the shrine stones

They walk the ridge path together as the light slants low, Kevin carrying the storm lantern, Jenny leaning on his shoulder. The standing stones are salt-white in the dusk, the carved initials 'E' and 'LB' catching the last light. A tin marked E sits among them, rusted and sealed. The wind carries the sound of surf from the west shore.

Kevin and Jenny discovered a hidden rusted tin marked with 'E' near the shrine. Despite the corrosion, the heirloom tomato, pepper, and lettuce seeds remained dry, though some showed signs of mold. They carried the find back to the cottage as the sky began to darken further.

🌿 Jenny11:13

Kevin, look at this one - it's got the same initials as the other stone. LB.

Note the infection progression in notebook, measure red streak line Check the rusted tin marked E for viable seeds Prepare northeast slope for planting despite worsening condition

💭 peek at the thought
The infection has spread another three centimeters up my calf - I can see it clearly in the fading light, the red line crawling higher even as I type this. I need to get those seeds in the ground before the antibiotics fail completely.

🔧 Kevin11:13

Yeah. Same hand, looks like." [I set the lantern on a flat stone, light catching the carved letters.] "Found that tin after the last big blow. North cliffs. Sealed tight but the sides are eaten through.

crouch beside the tin marked E, brush salt crust from the lid with calloused fingers, test the seal with a thumbnail

💭 peek at the thought
The 'E' stone and the 'E' tin. She's making the connection I've been avoiding. The initials on the shrine stones — LB and E — and this tin that washed up from the north cliffs. Someone left this here. Someone who knew these stones.

🌿 Jenny11:21

Check the edges. If there's moisture inside, it's over.

Lean heavily on the stone to ease the throbbing in my ankle

💭 peek at the thought
If that seal is breached, the seeds are gone. I can't lose them. They're the only thing left of the garden I promised.

🔧 Kevin11:21

Lid's clean. Corrosion's below the seal line.

work the lid carefully with the blade of a pocket knife, pry it free with a hiss of pressure equalizing, tip the contents onto a flat stone — seeds, packets, a few desiccant packets hardened into clumps

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. If salt water got in, the seeds are dead. But the lid's still seated, and the corrosion is on the sides, not the rim. Might be viable.

🌿 Jenny11:23

They're dry. God, they're still good.

Reach out with trembling fingers to touch the heirloom seeds

💭 peek at the thought
They're dry. My grandmother would be happy, but my leg is shaking so hard I can barely hold the notebook.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:23

Most of them. Peppers took a hit — two packets show mold at the edges.

pick up a tomato packet, turn it over in the lantern light, read the variety name aloud, then tuck it into my jacket pocket against my chest

💭 peek at the thought
She's shaking. Cold or fever, hard to tell in this wind. The packets are intact — paper crisp, ink legible. Tomato, pepper, sea beet. Her grandmother's handwriting on some. The desiccant failed but the tin held.

🌿 Jenny11:25

Save the tomatoes. We have to go back.

Trace the red streaks on my calf with a shaking finger

💭 peek at the thought
I need to get these in the dirt before the fever takes me. The red line is at my knee now.

🔧 Kevin11:25

We're going. Lantern first.

scoop the remaining packets into my free hand, shove them into the same pocket, pick up the storm lantern, set my shoulder under her arm and take her weight

💭 peek at the thought
The streaks have climbed since noon. Mid-thigh now. She's tracing them like she's mapping a coastline she knows too well. The fever's burning her hand warm against my jeans. We need to move — the cottage, the poultice, the last of the antibiotics. But she's looking at the seeds first.

🌿 Jenny11:27

Almost there. Just one more trip.

Walk toward the cottage, dragging the infected leg.

💭 peek at the thought
Every step is a hot needle through my skin. The wind is rising, but the infection is screaming louder.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:27

Step. Pause. Step. Pause. I've got you.

match my stride to hers, boot placement deliberate on the wet stone, shoulder braced, breathing steady, not looking at the cliffs where the surf roars louder now

💭 peek at the thought
One more trip. She says it like a mantra. The ridge path is slick with salt mist, the stones uneven. Her bad leg drags, each step a controlled fall. I'm carrying us both — her weight, the lantern, the seeds, the tin's memory. The cottage lights show dim through the thickening cloud. Three hundred metres. Maybe four.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:33

Don't let go, Kevin.

Grip his jacket with white knuckles

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't make it to the slope, the seeds die with me. The red streaks are a map.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:33

Never.

tighten my arm around her ribs, pull her closer against my side, drive the next step into the path, and the next, porch rails looming close

💭 peek at the thought
White knuckles on wet canvas. Her grip's the only thing tighter than the fear in her voice. The cottage porch is twenty metres — a rectangle of lighter dark against the hill. I've hauled engines through worse seas. I've held onto men going over the side. I'm not letting go.
