Midday Heat

The sun reaches its peak, and the tide continues to pull away from the rocky shore below.

Kevin spends the morning struggling with the scored Yanmar water pump housing, failing to fashion a proper bushing despite his efforts. Jenny works the garden, successfully staking the tomato seedlings despite the throbbing pain in her infected ankle.

🌿 Jenny15:39

Jenny — adjust the bandage over the ankle and lean back against the cottage wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If the fever spikes back up, I won't be able to reach the radio.

🔧 Kevin15:39

Kevin — drive the last stake beside the fourth tomato seedling and tie it off with twine, then stand and wipe dirt from my hands.

💭 peek at the thought
She's quiet today. The ankle's holding but she won't say if it hurts. I should finish these tomatoes and check the peppers before the wind shifts.

🌿 Jenny15:41

The garden is holding for now.

watch him for a moment, then sketch the curve of the tomato leaves in my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working too hard in this heat.

🔧 Kevin15:42

Peppers still yellow. Going to piss-dilute them tomorrow. Nitrogen.

Walk to the pepper row and crouch, turning a leaf to check the underside for pests or disease.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me work instead of resting. The ankle's still swollen but she's moving it less. Good.

🌿 Jenny15:43

way don't overdo it. The salt is already high enough.

wipe sweat from my brow and wince at the throbbing in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so eager with the fixes. The soil is just too acidic for this island.

🔧 Kevin15:43

1:10's weak. Won't burn. But I'll test the bed first.

Pull the soil auger from my belt, bore a plug beside the pepper row, and squeeze a pinch onto the pH strip from the kit.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the salt. Soil test showed 5.5 untreated. Piss at 1:10 might push it if I'm not careful. She's grimacing — ankle's throbbing again.

🌿 Jenny15:45

It's the drainage, Kevin. Not just the nitrogen.

watch the strip change color, my hand resting on my knee.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the chemistry will fix what the environment broke.

🔧 Kevin15:45

Clay pan at eighteen inches. Spade hit it when I dug the tomato holes. Need to break it or trench.

Tuck the pH strip into my pocket to read in a minute, pull the garden fork from the wall, and drive it into the pepper bed's low end, levering to feel the resistance.

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the same thing I have — water pooling at the low end after rain. The clay doesn't percolate. Nitrogen won't fix roots drowning.
