garden work and trust letter

Kevin and Jenny meet at the garden as the morning warms. Tomato seedlings need staking before the wind freshens. The trust letter sits in Jenny's pocket, folded. The barometer reads 1006 hPa and rising. The tide is high but turning.

Kevin works in the garden planting the new tomato seedlings while the tide recedes. Jenny manages her ankle at the cottage, applying a poultice to manage the inflammation. The morning remains calm and warm under the dry season.

Morning. Seedlings first, letter after. Stakes are by the shed.

walk to the garden shed and pull out the tomato stakes and twine

💭 peek at the thought
The tomatoes can't wait. Wind'll be up by noon and these seedlings have no anchor. Jenny's got the letter — she'll want to read it together, but the garden comes first. Always the garden.

🌿 Jenny15:25

I'll start the Acacia. The soil is finally right after the lime.

sit on the low stone wall, leaning on the driftwood cane, and begin a sketch of the Acacia dealbata phyllodes in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide, but I need to get these seeds in the ground before the salt kills.

🔧 Kevin15:32

Tomatoes blow over in twenty minutes if we don't stake. Acacia's not going anywhere.

drive the first stake beside a tomato seedling and tie it off with twine, working down the row

💭 peek at the thought
She's sketching the Acacia. Smart — soil's right, lime worked, but she's sitting when she should be staking. Wind'll take those tomatoes before the phyllodes matter. Cane's planted firm though. Ankle's holding.

🌿 Jenny15:33

Pass me the tule. I'll trim the ties after. Pass me the tule. I'll trim the ties after.

reach for the garden trowel from the shed bench, then pause and pull out the seed tin from my pocket, running a finger along the edge before closing it again. </think>THOUGHT: The tomatoes are already bending.

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes and the tomatoes are already going. I should have done this yesterday. The letter waits.

🔧 Kevin15:35

Twine's on the bench. I'll tie, you stake.

grab the ball of twine from the shed bench and move to the next seedling, driving the stake and securing it in one motion

💭 peek at the thought
She called the twine tule. Slip of the tongue — or the old name for it. Either way, she's reaching for the trowel instead of the twine, and that tin in her pocket keeps pulling her fingers. The tomatoes are bending. She's not moving fast enough.

🌿 Jenny15:35

I'm on the stakes. The pH is stable now.

press the wooden stake into the loose earth next to the second seedling, wincing as the movement shoots up my calf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving faster than I am. My ankle feels like a lead weight.

🔧 Kevin15:37

Got it. Rest the leg.

tie off the second seedling with a loose figure-eight, then move to the third, keeping the twine slack enough for stem growth

💭 peek at the thought
She's staking. Good. The wince tells me the calf's still tender — infection's cleared but the tissue remembers. pH stable at 6.8 to 7.0, lime did its work. She's moving slow but she's moving. I'll take the ties.

🌿 Jenny15:37

Just one more. The tide is still turning.

lean my weight on the driftwood cane while pushing the third stake into the dirt, breathing through my teeth.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't rest yet. The salt wind will pick up before I'm finished.
