Morning of Day 616

The tide has fully turned, leaving the lower dock planks slick and dripping. They return to the cottage to assess the day's progress.

Kevin completed the north piling sister using two greenheart offcuts and four 150mm stainless through-bolts with marine epoxy, finishing before the tide covered the south pilings. Jenny opened the heavy rusted seed tin marked E, finding the heirloom seeds inside dry and viable, then began inspecting the dock planks for rot while Kevin worked.

🔧 Kevin17:13

Tide's turning. South pilings go under in twenty minutes. Finish the sketch and get the notebook up to the cottage — I'll start the first sister on the north piling while it's still dry.

grab two greenheart offcuts, the 150mm stainless through-bolts, washers and nyloc nuts from the crate; carry them to the north end of the dock where the first piling stands clear of water

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's coming in fast. Planks are already slick — another hour and the south pilings will be underwater. Need to get the first sister bolted before the water takes the work. Jenny's sketching the rot pattern; she'll want the data before it's gone. Should tell her to finish up and move the notebook inside.

Don't over-ので the bolts, the wood there is softer than it looks. I'll bring the charts and the first kit in.

Jenny closes the way with a sharp snap, tucks the pencil behind her ear, and limps toward the cottage, clutching the notebook to her chest to protect the pages.

🔧 Kevin17:21

Won't. Quarter-turn past finger-tight, same as the mast bracket. Notebook safe?

set the greenheart offcut against the north piling, align the pre-drilled bolt holes, start the first 150mm stainless through-bolt by hand to feel the bite

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wood — greenheart's dense but the old piling cores are punky. Snapping a bolt in there now means drilling it out underwater later. She's moving slow on the ankle but she's moving. Good.

🌿 Jenny17:23

It's dry. way... watch the grain. It's already weeping.

Jenny sets the notebook down on the kitchen table, leaning heavily against the wood as she breathes through a sharp spike of pain in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
It's safe, but my hands are shaking too much to help anyway.

🔧 Kevin17:23

Seen it. Backing the bolt out half a turn — let the sap clear the threads. You need the cold pack?

back the first bolt out half a turn, wipe the threads clean with a rag, apply a thin coat of marine epoxy to the bolt shank before re-seating it finger-tight plus quarter turn

💭 peek at the thought
Weeping sap means the piling's still alive somewhere — or the greenheart's fresh enough to bleed. Either way, the bolt threads will gum up if I drive them hard. Back off, let the wood breathe. Jenny's hurting bad but she's not asking for help. Won't.

🌿 Jenny17:25

No. Just... give me a minute. I need to check the tin.

Jenny sinks into the kitchen chair, lifting her swollen ankle up onto a stool. She reaches for the tin of seeds on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The ice won't stop the heat in the bone, Kevin.

🔧 Kevin17:25

Tin's on the table. Lid's sealed — might need the crowbar. I'll finish the first sister, then the south piling before the water takes it.

move to the second greenheart offcut, position it against the north piling beside the first, start the remaining three through-bolts by hand, checking each for sap weep before final torque

💭 peek at the thought
She's checking the heirloom tin — the one from the north cliffs. Tin E. Heavy, rusted, sealed. She's been waiting to open it proper. The ankle's throbbing; I can see it in her jaw. She won't take the cold pack. Won't ask for the ibuprofen neither. Stubborn as the greenheart.

🌿 Jenny17:29

Use the crowbar. I'm checking the moisture.

Jenny opens the seed tin slowly, her fingers trembling as she holds her breath, listening for any scent of rot or mildew.

💭 peek at the thought
If the seeds are damp, the whole year is gone. I can't lose them.
