The Calm Before the Storm

The first heavy drop of rain hits the stone roof, followed by a sudden gust of wind from the north.

The heavy, humid air of the wet season presses against the cottage as the storm finally breaks. A steady rain lashes the corrugated roof, a rhythmic drumming that masks the sound of the surf. Inside, the smell of damp wood and medicinal sea beet poultice lingers in the air while the tide continues its pull from the shore.

Storm's here. Going to batten the radio mast and check the dinghy. Stay put.

walk to the radio mast on the porch and inspect the aerial insulator and guy lines

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's breaking early. Barometer's been lying or the front accelerated. Need to secure the radio aerial before the wind shreds what's left of it, then check the cottage shutters and the dinghy lines. Jenny's ankle won't like the pressure drop.

Don't get the gauze wet.

Reach for the notebook and trace the edge of the red line with a trembling hand.

💭 peek at the thought
The red is at the knee. If the boat doesn't come, I'm going to have to cut it out myself.

🔧 Kevin23:05

Won't. Radio mast first — aerial's already shattered. Then the dinghy lines. Back in ten.

climb onto the porch roof to check the radio mast guys and the shattered aerial insulator

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the spread herself. Good. Means she's still thinking clinical. The tremor's the fever, not fear.

🌿 Jenny23:07

Just... just watch the radio. The antibiotics aren't working.

Pull the blanket up to my chest, shivering despite the heat radiating from my skin.

💭 peek at the thought
Ten minutes is an eternity when the sepsis is moving this fast.

🔧 Kevin23:07

Watching it. Not moving far.

descend from the porch roof and sit at the radio shelf, turning the squelch and scanning the emergency and coastguard frequencies

💭 peek at the thought
She's scared. Right to be. The red line's past the last mark and the fever's not breaking. Antibiotics finished. What's left is heat, time, and whatever the sea beet poultice buys. But she asked me to watch the radio. So I watch the radio.

🌿 Jenny23:09

Jenny — close my eyes and try to focus on the throb in my thigh instead of the rain on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
If I lose the leg, the seeds stay in the tin. I can't let them rot.

🔧 Kevin23:09

—

move the radio handset to the porch doorway, set the speaker volume high, and scan frequencies while watching the dock through the rain

💭 peek at the thought
She's fading into the fever. Good she's still conscious. Bad she's stopping talking. Need the radio alive in case the coastguard comes back on, or the supply boat tries early. Also need the dinghy secure — if the mooring parts in this gusting north wind, we lose the only way off. But leaving the radio now means missing a call. Compromise: radio watch from the porch doorway. Can see the dock, hear the set.

🌿 Jenny23:11

Kevin... do you hear anything?

Reach for the seed tin on the nightstand, fingers brushing the cold metal.

💭 peek at the thought
The red is crossing the joint now. It's a map of my failure.
