Low Tide Inspection

The tide has finally reached its lowest point, revealing the barnacle-covered rocks and the seacocks of the dinghy if moved out.

The rain continues its steady rhythm, drumming against the corrugated metal of the old shrine shelter. The tide has receded to its lowest point, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the tide pools and the base of the dock. The air is heavy with humidity, and the smell of salt and damp earth rises from the island.

🌿 Jenny10:43

The tide is out. I'll go after I eat these limpets.

Eat a cold limet from the bowl and stare at the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide is this low, I could finally check the seacock before the water returns, but I'm too hungry to move.

🔧 Kevin10:43

Take the skiff round. I'll meet you at the dock with the torch and tools.

walk down to the dock with tool bag and headlamp

💭 peek at the thought
Low tide means the seacocks are exposed. Need to get the dinghy moved and check both before water comes back. She's eating cold limpets in the rain — not stopping her.

🌿 Jenny10:45

Don't slip on the ridge rocks.

Stand up slowly, wiping my hands on my trousers, and grab my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out in that rain again. The rocks will be as slick as glass under his feet.

🔧 Kevin10:45

I know the ridge. Go on.

pick up the crowbar and follow her down the path toward the dock, watching footing on the wet stone

💭 peek at the thought
She's taking the notebook to the dock. Recording something or just bringing it. Ridge rocks are slick with rain and weed — she's right to warn.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:47

Just watch where you step.

Start walking toward the dock, clutching the notebook under my arm to keep the sketches dry.

💭 peek at the thought
It's always this way when the weather is turning. The island doesn't care about his confidence.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:48

Kevin — follow behind her on the path, testing each foot placement, crowbar hooked over my shoulder, headlamp beam cutting through the rain ahead

💭 peek at the thought
She's protective of that notebook. Sketches matter to her. The path down is steep in spots, wet shale over clay — one bad step and you're sliding.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:49

The tide is coming faster than it looks.

Keep walking toward the dock, eyes fixed on the rising water around the rocks.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is still dropping. If he goes out there now, the surge will catch him in the channel.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:49

Move faster then.

lengthen stride on the slick path, breath steady, dock timbers showing ahead through the rain

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the water, not the path. Tide turns quick here — six hours out, six back, but the last hour floods fast. Need the dinghy in position and seacocks checked before it covers the hull.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:51

I'm not slipping on these wet stones.

Step carefully over a patch of mossy rock, my stomach twisting with the hunger.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always racing against the clock. The sea doesn't wait for his schedule.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:51

Kevin — reach the dock planking, set crowbar down, grab the dinghy painter and start hauling it toward the cleared space where the hull bottom will be exposed at low water

💭 peek at the thought
Hunger's hitting her hard — she mentioned it earlier. Me too, weak with it. But the tide waits for no one. Dock's close now. Need the dinghy pulled clear and the seacocks visible before the water rises over them.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:53

Watch the edge, the wood is rotting.

Stand at the edge of the dock, watching the water lap at the stones.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to exhaust himself before the boat even arrives. My legs are too weak to help him.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:53

Got it.

plant feet on solid timber, heave the dinghy up onto the slip rails, muscles burning in the cold rain, get the keel blocks under it so the hull sits level and the seacocks are clear of the rising water

💭 peek at the thought
She's not helping haul. Just watching. The dock planking is rotten in spots — she's right. Stepped through a soft board last week. Dinghy's heavy out of water, need leverage.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:55

Check the seals properly once it's down.

Lean against the cottage wall, watching him work in the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually doing it. I hope those blocks are solid, or the whole thing slides back in.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:55

Light.

kneel in the wet gravel beside the hull, headlamp beam on the first seacock flange, tap the bronze with the crowbar tip to check for electrolytic crumbling, then work the handle through full open and shut

💭 peek at the thought
Dinghy's on the blocks, level enough. Water's still below the hull but climbing. Two seacocks — engine intake and head discharge. Bronze through-hulls, flanged nuts inside. Need the crowbar and wrench to check flange bolts, wiggle the handles, look for weep or corrosion at the hull interface. She's staying dry under the eaves. Fine.
