Low Tide Inspection

The rain slackens slightly as the tide holds at its lowest. Kevin and Jenny stand by the dinghy, their headlamps cutting through the gloom to inspect the exposed hull.

The tide rises steadily against the dock pilings, the salt air heavy with the coming day. Kevin works with the tacky epoxy on the dinghy's transom while Jenny finishes her sketches of the sea beet morphology as the morning heat begins to set in.

Transom's dry. Crack's clean. We'll glass it now while the tide's out.

pull epoxy tub and fibreglass mat from the porch, mix a small batch, brush epoxy into the transom crack and lay the first mat strip over it

💭 peek at the thought
Good light now. Transom crack's clean, dry enough for epoxy. Seacocks exposed too. Get this done before the tide turns.

Don't use too much. It'll get tacky before it even sets.

Squat down on the rotting timber of the dock, watching the way the water retreats from the limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to waste the resin if he rushes the cure; the humidity is too high.

Thin coats. Two layers max before it kicks.

spread a thin, even coat of epoxy into the crack with the brush, lay the first fibreglass strip, stipple it down to squeeze out air, then brush a second thin coat over the top

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Thin coats, work fast. Humidity's still high.

🌿 Jenny10:59

Just watch for bubbles. The air is too heavy tonight.

Pull out my notebook and start sketching the morphology of the sea much leaves I found earlier.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's too thick, it'll bubble when the salt hits it again.
