The Squall Approaches

The still air finally breaks as the first cold gust of wind blows from the west, the sky darkening a bruised purple.

The heavy air of the wet season clings to the cottage as the sun begins to dip. The tide is high now, lapping at the reinforced dock pilings, while the water tank continues to overflow onto the thirsty foundation. The radio sits on the kitchen table, warm and humming from the charge, the message of a global digital blackout still hanging in the silence of the room.

Kevin! The east shutter—now!

Closes the sketchbook and stands up, limping toward her good leg as she moves toward the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping fast; I need to get those shutters secured before the rain starts.

Moving.

Sprint to the east porch shutter, grab the staged 10mm stainless through-bolts and washers, drive the second knee home and dog it down before the wind hits full force.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing west fast. Barometer's been falling all afternoon. She's right — east shutter's only got the first knee in. If that gust hits broadside before it's dogged, the porch frame goes.

🌿 Jenny10:07

Check the bolts on the west side!

Leans against the whitewashed stone wall, watching the trees lean on the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fast, but the wind is going to rip the salt off the stone.

🔧 Kevin10:08

Checking.

Cross the porch to the west shutter, test each bolt with the 19mm wrench — feel for movement in the timber, check the temporary braces held.

💭 peek at the thought
West side's the jury-rig. Two bolts in soft timber, no doubler plate. If the east holds, the wind loads the west. She knows.

🌿 Jenny10:09

The tide is coming in. Get inside.

Wipes a hand over her throbbing ankle, wincing as she moves toward the kitchen door.

💭 peek at the thought
If those shutters go, the rain will ruin the sketches and the seeds.

🔧 Kevin10:10

Right behind you.

Step back through the kitchen door, pull it shut against the gust, latch it. Glance at the barometer on the shelf — 994 now.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's rising, wind backing west, barometer 996 and falling. West bolts are holding for now — timber's sound where the braces took the load. But the porch framing's still the weak link. She's not leaving the door until I do.

🌿 Jenny10:11

Check the radio. We need the battery charged.

Sinks into the kitchen chair, pulling her leg out to rest the throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. This is going to be a bad one.

🔧 Kevin10:12

Battery's charged. Generator's hot. Shutting it down.

Walk to the generator shed, kill the engine, check the fuel gauge — 40% on the tank. Walk back to the cottage, lift the shortwave from the porch shelf, bring it inside, set it on the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
Generator's been running an hour at load. Battery should be near full. Radio's sheltered under the tarp on the porch — aerial insulator's the weak point, shattered ceramic held with self-amalgamating tape. If the wind tears it, we're blind.

🌿 Jenny10:13

Put it by the stove. I need to check the Signal.

Reaches for the saline bottle, fingers trembling slightly as she avoids the throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the generator dies now, we're blind until the boat comes.

🔧 Kevin10:14

Saline's gone. Used the last on your ankle.

Set the radio on the wooden chair pulled up to the table, away from the stove pipe. Run the power lead to the battery terminals. Flip the standby switch — tubes warming. Turn the RF gain up, dial to Tom's frequency. Hand her the mic.

💭 peek at the thought
Saline's been empty since the last debridement. She's reaching for nothing. The radio by the stove puts heat on the set — bad for the finals if we transmit long. But she wants the Signal. That means Tom's frequency. She's been waiting for this window.
