Evening - The Silence

Kevin and Jenny sit in the kitchen, the static of the radio the only sound against the rising wind beginning to pick up as the first raindrop hits the dust.

The rain continues its steady, rhythmic drumming against the roof of the old shrine as the air grows heavy with the 27°C humidity. The water tank has finally reached its absolute 400-litre capacity, the overflow pipe beginning to spill a constant stream into the drainage trench, quickly lost in the downpour.

🌿 Jenny10:15

The pressure is dropping. We need to secure the math shutter.

Reach for the notebook on the table, fingers trembling slightly from the heat in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, the seeds don't matter anyway.

🔧 Kevin10:16

East shutter. First knee's in. Needs the second knee, the through-bolts, the doubler plate. I'll do it. You sit.

stand, pick up the 10mm stainless through-bolts and washers staged by the porch door, walk out onto the porch toward the east shutter frame

💭 peek at the thought
She means the east porch shutter — still only the first knee fitted. The west one's dogged down. If the wind backs west like the barometer says, the east side takes it broadside. She's trembling. Fever's still in her. She shouldn't be moving.

🌿 Jenny10:17

Be careful with the drill, the cedar is soft.

Shift my weight away from the ankle, wincing as the throbbing spikes, and open the notebook to the sea beet sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked in that rain. The wood is already swelling.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:18

Pilot holes first. Slow feed. I know the wood.

set the drill bit to the 10mm auger, brace against the porch post, drill the first pilot hole through the east shutter frame into the salt-pine knee blank

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — cedar splits if you lean on the bit. Pilot holes first, slow feed. She's watching me work instead of the sketch. The ankle's throbbing bad enough to spike through the metronidazole. Two doses left. She won't take them till morning.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:19

The tide's coming in fast. Watch the wind across the ridge.

Trace the gland density gradient on the sea beet sketch with a charcoal pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of the drill is louder than the rain in my head.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:21

Wind's backing. West gusts'll hit the east face. Two knees, four bolts each, plate between. Be done before full dark.

finish the first pilot hole, blow chips clear, start the second pilot hole through the frame into the knee blank

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's high already. Wind across the ridge means it's backing west — broadside to the porch. The east shutter's the weak face. Second knee, through-bolts, doubler plate. Three more holes per knee. Generator's charged. Radio's warm. She's drawing salt glands while the barometer drops.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:22

The barometer is bottoming out. Don't let it catch.

Rub the swollen skin of my ankle, trying to ignore the heat, and watch him through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working too fast. The rain is going to warp the grain.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:22

Eight bolts total. Two in. Six to go. Plate goes on last.

finish the second pilot hole, move to the third position on the first knee, drill pilot hole three

💭 peek at the thought
995 and falling. She feels it in the ankle — joints know pressure before instruments do. Four bolts per knee, two knees, eight holes total. Two done. Six left. The doubler plate's steel, heavy, staged by the door. Need to drive bolts through frame, knee, plate, frame. Nylocs on the inside. Wind's rising. Rain hitting horizontal.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:23

Through-bolts from the tin. Use the ones with the washers. The spare insulator's in the workshop. Install it after we secure these knees. Slow the feed rate, the grain's shifting. Use the torque wrench on the through-bolts. I'm going to need antibiotics tonight. The poultice's not holding. Use the doubler plate on the second knee. Don't skip it. After the shutters, we need to plant the sea beet seedlings before dark. I'll hold the through-bolt while you turn. I need to lance it before midnight. The antibiotics won't catch up. Almost there. One more pilot hole for the second knee. The generator's running fine at idle, but I need it for the radio tomorrow.

Slide the rusted metal tin toward him, the lid already cracked open, seeds scattered but still viable inside. </think> Grab the notebook, flip to the page with the shrine sketches, and trace the carved 'E' with my fingertip. </think> Retrie

💭 peek at the thought
The infection is spreading faster than he can drill. If he doesn't finish this before dark, the whole eastern wall will catch the wind. The wood is soaked through, the pilot holes are already starting to tear. The infection is moving up my calf faster than he can drill. If I don't get these through-bolts seated properly, the whole east wall will peel in the next gale. The seeds in tin E are still viable if I can get them in the ground before the storm hits. My hands are shaking too much to hold the torque wrench steady. The infection's reached my knee now, spreading faster than I can treat. The second knee needs the doubler plate, but the through-bolts are only half in. If the boat doesn't come in five days, I'm going to lose everything. The infection is

🔧 Kevin10:24

Bolts, washers, nylocs staged. Torque wrench set 35Nm. Doubler plate for second knee. Spare insulator after. You take the doses now. Both. With broth.

pick up a 10mm stainless through-bolt with washer, feed it through the first pilot hole from the outside, reach inside for the nyloc nut

💭 peek at the thought
She's stacking orders like a chief engineer on a bad watch. Through-bolts, washers, torque wrench, doubler plate, spare insulator, sea beet seedlings, antibiotics, lancing, generator. The tin's open — seed tin E, heavy, rusted, lid cracked. Seeds scattered. She pushed it to me. The ankle's septic. Red line at the groin. She knows. Two antibiotic doses left. She'll take them tonight or she won't. Wind's hitting the porch broadside now. Rain stinging. Third pilot hole done. Fourth next. Then second knee. Plate. Bolts. Nylocs. Torque to spec. Then the insulator. Then the seedlings. Then the needle.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:27

The broth is cold. I'll take the pills now.

Reach for the tin mug on the table, fingers trembling as I swallow the dry tablets with a grimace.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is making the room tilt, but the wind is getting louder.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:27

Good. Keep the mug. I'll heat broth after.

thread the nyloc onto the first bolt, finger-tight, move to the second pilot hole, insert bolt and washer, start the nyloc

💭 peek at the thought
She dry-swallowed. No broth. Trembling hands. The metronidazole's bitter on an empty stomach. Two doses — that's the course done. Four bolts in the first knee now. Four more in the second. Doubler plate between. Wind's steady west-northwest, gusting. Rain horizontal. Porch frame groans. She's back at the sketch. Charcoal smudged on her thumb. The sea beet glands. She's recording while the storm builds.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:29

Hurry. The pressure is dropping.

Lean back against the cottage wall, watching his hands work against the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
My pulse is throbbing in my ankle, matching the rhythm of the rain.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:29

Second knee. Plate. Four bolts. Then torque all eight.

lift the second salt-pine knee blank into position against the east shutter frame, align the doubler plate on the inside face, drill first pilot hole through frame, knee, plate

💭 peek at the thought
Four bolts in the first knee. Nylocs finger-tight. Second knee blank staged. Doubler plate leaning against the porch post. Wind's screaming across the ridge now — west-northwest, broadside. Rain cuts sideways. Barometer's below 990. She's pale, sweating, leaned against the wall watching. The ankle's hot through the bandage. Course done. Now it waits.
