The Approaching Front

The pressure has dropped significantly as the sky turns a bruised purple. Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage to secure the shutters before the first heavy rain hits.

Kevin secured the gap in the west porch shutter using cedar shims and the final stainless bolts, successfully stopping the leak. Jenny moved the heirloom seed tin inside to protect it from the humidity, applying a cold pack to her swollen ankle as the pressure continues to drop.

🌿 Jenny05:03

Help me with the east side first. I can't put full weight on it.

Lean heavily on the driftwood cane and limp toward the porch, clutching the blanket around my legs.

💭 peek at the thought
983 hPa was a lie; the sky is falling. I can feel the fever humming in my joints, but if those shutters aren't bolted, the wind will rip the house open.

East side first. I'll get the come-along.

walk to the workshop and grab the come-along, then head to the east porch shutter

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle bad. The pressure's dropping fast — barometer was 982, now probably under 978. East shutter's the one with the corroded bolt. Come-along's in the workshop. Need to move.

🌿 Jenny05:04

Just the bolts, Kevin. Don't over-tension the frame or you'll warp the wood.

Slowly shuffle to the east shutter and lean against the whitewashed wall, watching him with the come-along.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast. I can't keep up, and the throbbing in my ankle is timed with my heartbeat now.

🔧 Kevin05:04

Just the bolts. Snug, not strained.

set up the come-along on the east shutter, pull the frame tight enough to seat the brass shim and drive the corroded bolt home, then secure with the 10mm stainless through-bolt and nyloc nut

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the timber. Greenheart sister knee I fitted last month holds, but the old frame's got memory in it. Too much pull and the mortise splits. Just snug the bolts, seat the shim, let the tide do the rest.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:07

Good. Now check the barometer again. It's dropping too fast.

Sit on the edge of the porch and press the cold pack to my swollen ankle, watching for the first gust of wind.

💭 peek at the thought
He did it right. The frame is true, but the air is getting heavy with that salt-storm smell. My tackle is a hot iron, and the sea much poultice is barely holding the heat.

🔧 Kevin05:07

On it.

walk inside to the kitchen shelf and read the barometer, then call out the reading

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Dropping fast means the front's accelerating. Need the number.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:09

It's at 978. We need to move the seed tin inside, now.

Shift on the floor to reach for the heirloom seed tin, wincing as the pain shoots through my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
980 and falling. If it drops any lower, the swell is going to be a monster. I need to get those seeds inside before the humidity ruins them.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:09

I'll get it. Stay off the foot.

pick up the heirloom seed tin E from the porch and carry it inside to the high pantry shelf

💭 peek at the thought
978 and falling. That's a proper drop. Four millibars since I checked. Front's moving faster than the forecast. Seed tin E's on the porch — heavy, rusted, sealed. If the shutters blow, water gets in. She shouldn't be moving on that ankle.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:10

Thank you.

Slowly push myself up from the porch floor using the wall for support, keeping the weight off the infected ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He knows exactly where it goes. I hate that I can't just do it myself, but I can't argue with a man who treats my seeds like gold.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin05:10

Sit back down. West shutter and dock lines need doing. I'll do both.

head to the west porch shutter to inspect the top hinge gap and secure it with the remaining stainless through-bolt and shims

💭 peek at the thought
Tin's safe on the high shelf. She's up but shouldn't be weight-bearing. The west shutter's still loose — saw the gap at the top hinge yesterday. Wind'll hit that side next. Need to check the generator lashings too, and the dinghy's double lines at the dock. But she needs to sit, not stand.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:14

I can at least hold the flashlight.

Limp slowly toward the west shutter, clutching the cane and reaching for the LED lamp.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to protect me, but the helplessness is starting to feel like a bruise. I can't just sit here and watch the barometer plummet.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin05:15

Light'd help. Don't lean on the frame.

wedge cedar shims into the west shutter hinge mortise to square the frame, drive the last 150mm stainless through-bolt with washers and nyloc nut, and snug it just enough to close the gap

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn. The light's dimming anyway — been on all day. West hinge gap's about three mil. Got one 150mm stainless through-bolt left with washers and nyloc. Cedar shims in the workshop. Need to wedge the frame square, drive the bolt, don't over-tighten. She holds the light, I work. Keeps her off the ankle.
