The Storm Breaches

Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage as the first heavy gusts of wind rattle the eaves and the air pressure continues to fall more rapidly.

The rain has shifted to a heavy, driving downpour from the west, drumming against the cottage roof. The pressure continues its steady decline to 984 hPa, signaling the approaching storm is near. Inside, the air is humid and whistles through the gap in the east shutter that Kevin attempted to seal.

🔧 Kevin05:19

Pressure's falling hard. You hear that whistle at the east shutter?

walk to the porch and press my palm flat against the east shutter frame, feeling for flex in the greenheart sister knee

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's found its voice. Barometer's dropping faster than the forecast said — this ain't just the front, it's the squeeze behind it. Shutters held last time but the east one's still got that gap. If the glass goes, we lose the radio aerial lead-in. Need to check the dinghy warp's not chafing on the ring.

🌿 Jenny05:19

I hear it. The house is breathing, Kevin. Just leave it be.

Lean back against the bench and pull the blanket tighter over my legs, glancing at the barometer.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessing over the shutters again. I can barely feel my toes, and he's feeling for flex in a piece of wood.

🔧 Kevin05:20

Frame's holding. Gap's whistling though — means the seal's blown. Got any of that self-amalgamating tape left?

pull the roll of self-amalgamating tape from the radio shelf and tear off a strip with my teeth, stretching it tight across the shutter's meeting rail where the light knifes through

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the breathing. Frame's moving maybe two mil — greenheart's doing its job. But that whistle means air's getting forced through, and where air goes, water follows. The gap's small but the pressure differential's building. If the eye wall hits at high tide...

🌿 Jenny05:21

You're going to run out of tape before the wind actually hits.

Reach for the notebook and sketch a quick, sharp line of the barometer's current dip.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so frantic. The seal isn't "blown," it's just a gap. He's trying to fix the house because he can't fix my leg.

🔧 Kevin05:23

Tape's for the glass. Come-along's for the shutter. Different jobs.

finish stretching the tape across the meeting rail, smoothing it with the heel of my palm until the whistle drops to a low hiss, then step back and watch the barometer needle with her

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Tape's a band-aid and the roll's half gone. But it buys the glass time. The real fix is the come-along at low tide, cinching the shutter home proper. That's six hours out. Wind'll be screaming by then.

🌿 Jenny05:23

It's not going to stop just because you've taped the windows.

Shift my weight slightly, wincing as the movement pulls at the poultice on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's staring at that needle like he can hold it in place by sheer will. It's a storm, not a math problem.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin05:24

No. But it keeps the rain out of the radio gear.

crouch down beside the bench, peel back the edge of the blanket to check the poultice — see if the swelling's gone down or if the heat's spread past the calf

💭 peek at the thought
She's talking about more than the window. The ankle, the radio silence, the supply boat that's two days late now. The letter in the dry bag I haven't given her. She reads the pressure dropping same as me.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:25

The radio is fine. My leg feels like it's on fire.

way my ankle away from his hand, watching the rain lash the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so worried about the radio. I'm the one who's rotting here.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:26

Let me look.

stay crouched, not reaching for her ankle again, just waiting — watching the red line I marked on her skin with the ballpoint pen this morning to see if it's moved

💭 peek at the thought
Heat spreading. She pulled away fast — protective, not just pain. The antibiotics finished yesterday. If the infection's tracking up the calf past the poultice line, we're past what sea beet and mint can hold. She knows it too, watching the rain instead of me.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:26

Fine. Just... be careful.

Slowly lift the edge of the blanket and shift my leg toward him, exposing the red ink line and the green-stained poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
He's waiting for me to give in. He wants the data, the objective proof that I'm not getting worse.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin05:28

It's tracking. Past the line.

gently lift the poultice edge with two fingers, checking the wound underneath for pus, smell, tissue colour — my face close, breath held

💭 peek at the thought
The red line's gone. Swallowed by a diffuse flush spreading two fingers' width past where I marked it this morning. Skin's tight, shiny. Heat radiating through the gauze before I even touch it. Lymphangitic spread — the infection's in the lymphatics now. Oral antibiotics won't catch it fast enough.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:29

Don't. Don't say it.

Pull my leg back sharply and wrap the blanket around me, turning my face away from him.

💭 peek at the thought
Of course it is. The antibiotics are gone, and the sea beet is barely holding the line. He can smell it too.
