The Eve of the Storm

The rain intensifies and the wind begins to howl through the eaves. Kevin and Jenny must decide how to secure the interior before the pressure drops below 980.

Kevin and Jenny spend the night in the cottage as the heavy air signals a coming change. Jenny rests her infected ankle while Kevin monitors the barometer and prepares for the expected supply boat arrival in two days.

🌿 Jenny05:31

Kevin, the pressure is stalling. We need to move the radio and the seed tin further back from the walls before it hits ninety-eighty.

Shift the blanket aside and attempt to stand, leaning heavily on the driftwood cane.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is barely moving now. If it dips below 980, the wind will stop whistling and start screaming. I can't move fast, but I can't just sit here while he does everything.

🔧 Kevin05:31

On it. You stay off that ankle.

move the shortwave radio and heirloom seed tin from the kitchen shelf to the bedroom wall, clear of the east shutter and any potential water ingress

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the pressure — barometer's been stuck at 984 for an hour, and that west wind's building teeth. Radio and seed tin are the two things we can't replace. Need to move them to the bedroom wall, away from the east shutter gap.

🌿 Jenny05:34

I'm not made of glass, Kevin.

Limp slowly toward the kitchen table and begin organizing the remaining medical supplies into a tighter pile.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's protecting me, but the silence in his voice is a wall. I hate being the fragile one in the room.

🔧 Kevin05:35

Didn't say you were.

unplug the radio coax, coil it careful, carry the set and the seed tin E into the bedroom and set them on the floor against the interior wall, then come back for the medical kit she's stacking

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving the medical kit instead of sitting down. Stubborn as the diesel pump on the old Maersk — won't quit even when the bearings are shot. Let her work; arguing wastes breath we need for the next job.

🌿 Jenny05:37

Thank you.

Hand him the medical kit and lean back against the table, watching the barometer needle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's doing that thing where he avoids the argument by just being efficient. It's infuriating. But the barometer is still the priority.

🔧 Kevin05:37

Need to batten the east shutter proper before the tide turns. Come-along's in the workshop.

grab the come-along from the workshop shelf, head out onto the porch, and lash the spare tarp over the east shutter gap with the come-along anchored to the porch post, cranking it tight against the west wind

💭 peek at the thought
Kit's lighter than it should be — antibiotics gone, gauze down to the last roll. She's watching the needle like it's a compass and we're already lost. Pressure's holding 984 but the wind's got a new note in it, lower, like a hull stressing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:38

Be careful with the tension! Don't snap the post!

Reach for the storm lantern and trim the wick, keeping it close by.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working against the clock now. If that tarp rips, the rain will soak the floorboards in minutes. I need to make sure we have the lanterns ready; if the wind takes the generator, we're in the dark.

🔧 Kevin05:38

Post'll hold. Frame's the worry.

crank the come-along slow, quarter-turn at a time, watching the shutter frame for movement or cracking, easing off if the timber groans, until the tarp's drum-tight across the gap

💭 peek at the thought
Post's greenheart, sunk two feet into bedrock — it'll take the strain. The shutter frame's the weak link, rotted at the bottom hinge. Crank slow, watch the timber, back off if it sings.
