The Storm Approaches

The first gust of the 40-knot wind rattles the shutters, and the rain finally begins to fall.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny06:25

Kevin, check the latches on the kitchen window again. The wind is picking up.

Stand up slowly, wincing as my ankle throbs, and walk toward the window to watch the sea.

💭 peek at the thought
The storm is coming faster than the radio said; if the boat doesn't make it tomorrow, we're cut off for another week.

🔧 Kevin06:25

Already on it. Kitchen window first, then the dinghy.

Walk to the kitchen window, test both latches, throw the sliding bolt home. Then pull on boots and oilskin, grab the heavy weather line coil from the porch hook, and head down to the dock to double the dinghy's bow warp around the mooring r

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifted. Barometer was 988 and falling last I looked. Forty knots means the supply boat won't cross the bar tomorrow. Need to secure the dinghy bow and check the generator shed lashings before the gusts hit fifty.

🌿 Jenny06:27

Make sure the cleat is secure, Kevin! The swell is already building.

Press my forehead against the cool glass, watching the grey horizon vanish into the spray.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is rising too fast; if that dinghy slips its moor, we'll lose the only way off this rock.

🔧 Kevin06:27

Cleat and backing plate. Stern spring chafe guard too.

Reach the dock, crouch at the dinghy bow. Hammer-test the cleat bolts — both ring solid. Run hand along the stern spring where it kisses the piling fairlead; chafe guard's shredded.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the swell. The cleat held last storm but the timber's softening. Need to check the backing plate bolts while I'm down there. And the stern spring we doubled last week — chafing point at the piling fairlead.

🌿 Jenny06:29

Use some of the old canvas for the spring! Don't let it rub the metal!

Move own the door, the sharp pain in my ankle making me hiss, and grab my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If that spring wears through, the tide will bash the dinghy against the rocks until the hull is tooth.

🔧 Kevin06:29

Canvas from the genny shed. Be right back.

Sprint up the dock path to the generator shed, haul the canvas roll out from under the lashed tarp, knife a two-foot strip off the end, sprint back down.

💭 peek at the thought
Canvas. Right. Heavy roll in the generator shed, dry. Saw it when I lashed the shed down. Good call — metal fairlead'll saw through rope in an hour at this swell.

🌿 Jenny06:33

way! Wrap it twice around the spring and tie it if you have to!

way against the stone wall of the cottage, watching the waves break against the math below.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast, but the wind is winning. If that spring snaps, the wayhy is gone by morning.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:33

On it.

Wrap the canvas strip twice around the stern spring at the fairlead, seat it in the groove. Tie a clove hitch around the standing part, snug it hard, add a half-hitch. Yank test — holds. Coil the tail, tuck it under the wraps.

💭 peek at the thought
Twice around and a clove hitch with a half-hitch backup. Quick, holds under load, comes off with a knife when the storm passes. She knows knots better than she lets on.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:35

Check the bow line again, Kevin. The swell is getting mean.

Lean against the doorframe, the salt spray stinging my eyes, and watch the wayhy dance in the rising tide.

💭 peek at the thought
It's holding for now, but the storm is coming in. If the boat doesn't show, I'm stuck here with this rotting leg.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:35

Checking.

Walk the dock to the bow, grab the line where it leads to the forward eye bolt. Heave on it — the cleat groans, timber compresses. Eye bolt shifts a hair in its bed. Not good.

💭 peek at the thought
Bow line took a beating last month. Retied it with slack for swell but the cleat on the dinghy's forward eye bolt is worn thin. If that parts, the stern spring won't hold her alone in this chop.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:39

Kevin, the bow bolt is shifting! Get the spare bolts and reinforce it now!

Step out own the porch, heart wiring against my ribs, and watch the wayhy strain against the waves.

💭 peek at the thought
That eye bolt is going to pull right through the wood. If that goes, the whole thing is lost.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:39

Getting the through-bolts. Workshop first, then the shutter stash.

Sprint up the dock path, cut across the garden toward the workshop. Yank the door, grab the bolt bin — two 10mm x 150mm stainless, four heavy washers, four nyloc nuts. Stuff them in oilskin pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
She saw it from the porch. Good eyes. The forward eye bolt's working loose in the transom — lag bolts pulling out of saturated spruce. Need the 10mm stainless through-bolts with backing plates. One left staged at the east shutter. Two more in the workshop. Washers and nylocs too.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:43

Hurry up! The water is rising too fast!

Grip the railing of the cottage, white-knuckled, and watch the wayhy lurch.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't get back with those bolts, the tide takes the wayhy. My ankle is throbbing in time with the waves.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:43

Working!

Sprint back down the dock, vault onto the dinghy bow. Drill the two new through-bolt holes either side of the existing eye bolt, drive the 10mm stainless through with washers both sides, thread nylocs, torque with the 19mm wrench.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's pushing hard. Swell period shortening — wind against current. The dinghy's bow is taking the brunt. If that eye bolt pulls through, the bow swings broadside and the stern spring snaps. Move.
