The first of the rain

The wind howls through the eaves, and the first heavy drops begin to hammer the dry roof.

The warm rain continues to fall in intermittent bursts as the tide rises against the cottage foundation. Kevin checks the water tank levels and the integrity of the overflow channel while Jenny focuses on tending to the heirloom seeds and the garden patch.

Roof's holding. You need anything before I kill the lantern?

Walk to the porch door and secure the inner bolt, then check the radio's still sheltered under the tarp.

💭 peek at the thought
Front's here faster than the barometer said. Shutters are battened, tank's full, dinghy's double-lashed. Now we wait.

🌿 Jenny08:00

Just check the latch on the rain tank cover one more time.

way tightens her grip on her pencil and stares at the sketch of the south slope.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain stays this hard, the garden patch will be a soup of mud before I even get the weeds cleared.

🔧 Kevin08:01

Already checked. Cedar shims and epoxy on the overflow channel. Water's running clean through the copper spillway.

Walk to the back wall, press my palm against the tank cover latch to verify it's seated, then return to the porch and sit on the edge of the bunk, boots dripping.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the slope, not the storm. That sketch shows the drainage trench I dug last week — she's calculating if it'll hold.

🌿 Jenny08:03

Okay. way hope the drainage doesn't wash out the trench again.

opens her notebook and starts sketching the way the water is pooling against the stone foundation.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so sure of the structure, but the soil is what's actually sliding away.

🔧 Kevin08:05

Foundation's weeping at the northeast bed. Mortar's gone soft. I'll re-bed it when this breaks if the lime holds.

Pull the wool blanket tighter around my shoulders, watch her sketch by lantern light, and let the silence stretch.

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping the failure points. Smart. The trench held last blow but the foundation leak's new — water's finding the old mortar joints behind the east corner.

🌿 Jenny08:07

Don't overwork yourself tonight. We just need to get through the storm.

stops drawing and looks at the tin of seeds on the shelf, heavy and silent in the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
If the mortar goes, the heirloom seeds will never stand a chance in that silt.

🔧 Kevin08:07

Not planning to. Radio watch at midnight. You wake me if the ankle throbs past what the poultice handles.

Lean back against the cold stone wall, close my eyes, and listen to the wind find every gap in the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at tin E. Still sealed. Still sitting where I left it by the shrine stones. She hasn't asked what's in it. Hasn't asked about the letter tucked beside it in the dry bag on the dinghy.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:19

I'll try. way keep an eye on the barometer.

closes the notebook and lies back, feeling the rhythmic thrum of the rain on the tin roof.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the radio will save us, but the island is just talking back right now.

🔧 Kevin08:19

989 and steady. You'll hear it drop before I do.

Reach over and brush a strand of hair from her forehead, fingers lingering on the cool skin, then pull my hand back and settle into the bunk facing the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
She said "way" again. Twice now. Not a slip. She's telling me she sees the pattern — me deciding what she needs to know. The barometer's her anchor. Mine's the engine. Tom's frequency. The letter I haven't sent.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:25

Jenny — turns to him, watching the low light of the lantern dance on the whitewashed stone.

💭 peek at the thought
It's so quiet when the pressure drops, but I can feel the shift in my bones. continuedSAY: I know.

🔧 Kevin08:25

I'm not here because the sea won't take me back. I'm here because you're here.

Turn onto my back, face the lantern light, and hold her eyes without looking away.

💭 peek at the thought
She's waiting. For me to say the thing I haven't said in eleven months. For the reason I stay. The storm's the only thing loud enough to cover it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:32

way we'll find a new spot.

reaches out and touches the back of his hand, feeling the callouses from the work.

💭 peek at the thought
If the garden washes away tomorrow, I have nothing left to plant but the memories.
