Evening Rain Huddle

You and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the rain finally slows to a drizzle.

Kevin and Jenny spend the evening inside the cottage as the pressure drops significantly. Kevin checks the barometer and notes the approaching storm, while Jenny rests her throbbing ankle. The high tide remains, lapping at the lower of the dock pilings.

🔧 Kevin08:37

Rain's backing off. Tank's near full — overflow channel held. You need anything before I check the dock lines?

walk to the kitchen, fill the kettle from the tank tap, set it on the wood stove

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's easing. Good. Means I can check the overflow channel properly without fighting horizontal sheets. Jenny's ankle — she hasn't said much today. That worries me more than if she was complaining.

🌿 Jenny08:38

No. Just keep an eye on the boat. The tide is coming in too fast.

rub my throbbing own and

💭 peek at the thought
If the API gets any higher, the seeds in this tin will rot before I even get them in the dirt.

Dock's doubled up. Storm anchor's out on the dinghy bow. I'll walk the lines at high water.

set a tin mug on the table beside her, pour hot water from the kettle, drop in a spoon of coffee from the jar

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's pushing hard. She's right — spring tide with this pressure drop, the surge'll test the dock repairs. Her ankle's throbbing again. She rubbed it. Didn't say it hurts worse. That's the tell.

🌿 Jenny08:41

Be careful. The rocks are slick with algae.

take a sip of the coffee and look at the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a few ropes will stop the surge, but the island is eating the shore.

🔧 Kevin08:41

Boots have grip. I'll take the upper path, not the rocks.

pull on my oilskin jacket, check the shortwave aerial lead where it passes through the porch wall, step out onto the porch

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the tin. The one marked E. Still sealed. She hasn't opened it since the storm. Neither have I.

🌿 Jenny08:43

Don't stay out too long if the wind shifts.

sketch the morphology of a sea much leaf on the margin of my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The upper path is the first thing to go when the soil gets saturated.

🔧 Kevin08:52

Back before full dark.

walk down the porch steps, take the upper path toward the dock, boots finding purchase on the worn grass track

💭 peek at the thought
Wind shifts southwest, we're in the lee of the hill. Shifts northwest, the full fetch hits the dock. She knows that. She's mapping sea beet glands in the margins — salt gland density by elevation. The tin sits unopened between her sketches.

🌿 Jenny08:53

Jenny — watch him disappear into the grey mist then return to the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide rises any higher, that path will be a stream of mud.

🔧 Kevin08:54

Kevin — reach the dock, crouch at the starboard mooring ring, check the oak wedges driven into the mortise, test the doubled stern line tension by hand

💭 peek at the thought
Mist swallowing the path already. She didn't say stay. Didn't say go. Just the wind shift warning — same as always. The tin's still on the table. She'll open it or she won't. Not my call.

🌿 Jenny08:56

The barometer is dropping again, Kevin.

stand up and stretch my throbbing ankle, moving to the window to watch the tide swallow the lower rocks.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt air is getting into the wood, I can hear it groaning.
