The Low Pressure Drops

Kevin sits on the porch steps watching the barometer as the needle dips toward 987 hPa. Jenny leans against the wall, propping her swollen ankle on a crate while watching the overcast sky. The air is heavy and smells of salt and coming rain.

Kevin works on the dock as the pressure drops, while Jenny watches the horizon from the porch.

🌿 Jenny07:05

The pressure is dropping fast. Check the boat lines.

reaches for the seed tin on the high shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
It's going to break. If it rains hard now, the south slope will be a mudslide by morning.

🔧 Kevin07:05

Already on it. Dinghy's bow and stern springs are doubled, storm anchor deployed off the bow. Just need to walk the dock pilings and the mooring ring.

walk down the porch steps and head toward the dock, flashlight beam cutting low across the planks

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's already at 989 and falling — she's right, it's moving faster than I like. Need to check the dinghy mooring and the dock lines before the swell builds. She's going for the seed tin; storm's close enough she's thinking what to save first.

🌿 Jenny07:09

Watch the pilings. The north one is looking soft.

opens the grandmother's seed tin and traces the edge of the heirloom packets with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the boat while the island is literally shifting under our feet.

🔧 Kevin07:09

Checked the north piling at low tide. Rot's past the sister. Might need to drive a new pile before winter.

step onto the dock planks, flashlight sweeping the north piling at the waterline, crouch to probe the softened wood with the crowbar tip

💭 peek at the thought
North piling's been soft all season — shimmed it last month but the rot goes deeper than the sister plank reaches. Tide's high now so I can see the waterline damage. She's handling the seed packets like they're fragile; they're not, but I won't say that.

🌿 Jenny07:11

secure the gear first. The storm is coming now.

stands up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts her ankle, and clutches the seed tin to her chest.

💭 peek at the thought
If the dock goes, we're stranded here. I need to find that stable soil before the rain washes everything away.

🔧 Kevin07:11

Generator's lashed, radio under tarp, ditch bag on the dinghy. Just the fuel drums and the spare propane to tie down.

straighten, sweep the flashlight along the dock to the fuel drum lashings, move to cinch the ratchet straps tighter around the diesel drums

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — wind's already backing southwest, feel it cold on the neck. Gear first, piling can wait until the weather breaks. She's moving slow, ankle's bad, but she's got the tin. Good. Means she's thinking past tonight.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:15

Make sure the drums are blocked. If they slide, they'll take the dock.

moves to the edge of the porch, her breath shallow in the humidity, and watches the grey sky swallow the south slope.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always preparing for the exit while I'm trying to survive the rot in the wood.

🔧 Kevin07:15

Chocks are greenheart, wedged tight. But not bolted. I'll drive spikes through them into the stringers.

grab the 19mm wrench and a handful of 150mm stainless spikes from the workshop shelf, return to the fuel drums, drive the first spike through the forward chock into the dock stringer with heavy hammer blows

💭 peek at the thought
Drums on the starboard side, chocked with the greenheart offcuts — but the chocks are only wedged, not bolted. A big swell lifts the dock enough, they'll shift. She's watching the south slope like she's reading something in the cloud. Ankle's killing her; I hear the breath hitch.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:17

Be careful with the spikes. The wood is soft there, it might split.

sits on the porch step, pulling the seed tin onto her lap, and watches the shadows dance on the salt spray.

💭 peek at the thought
Every strike of that hammer vibrates through the deck and right into my ankle. The island is too loud today.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:17

Pre-drilling. 12mm auger first, then spike.

swap the hammer for the brace and 12mm auger bit, bore a pilot hole through the forward chock into the stringer, blow out the salt dust, drive the spike home slow and straight

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong — stringers are salt-soft, old creosote long leached out. A spike driven too hard splits the grain and the chock comes loose anyway. Better to pre-drill. She's sitting now, weight off the ankle. Good. The tin's on her lap; she's not letting it go.
