← Day 644

the keeper's cottage · day 644 · morning

Dawn - The storm breaks over

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain hit the roof, the barometer continuing its plummet.

The morning pressure continues to drop as the barometer sits at 988 hPa, signaling an approaching front. The air is heavy and still, despite the 25°C heat, and the tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the pools near the shore.

🌿 Jenny07:21

The barometer is at 988. We need to get the seeds to the high shelf.

Picks up the rusted seed tin from the table and moves to the top cupboard in the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if I don't move the tin now, the humidity will rot the packets.

Got the tarps staged by the porch door. Radio's sheltered under the overhang, aerial's tied down. Generator's lashed. Dinghy's double-warped to the north piling and the mooring ring with the storm anchor out on fifty metres of warp.

Walk over to the wood stove, open the door, and add two armfuls of dry firewood from the stack by the back wall, then close the damper halfway to build a slow, hot bed of coals that'll hold through the night.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving fast, purposeful. Good. The barometer's dropped another point since I checked it on the dock. Rain's starting to hammer the roof now — that sound changes fast when the wind picks up. The seeds are the only thing on this island that can't be replaced.

🌿 Jenny07:25

I'll check the rain tank level again before we sleep. It's nearly full.

Places the seed tin on the highest shelf of the kitchen cupboard,

He's so methodical with the gear, but the soil is what's going to fail if it shifts.

Gutters held last blow. Screen's clear. If it chokes, I'll clear it at dawn.

Pull the kettle from the hook, set it on the stove top, and fill it from the tank tap — water's cold, will take a few minutes to boil.

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's at 397 litres — she's right, near full. The overflow pipe I jury-rigged with the copper spillway and hose extension should handle the excess, but if the gutters clog with spruce needles in this blow, we'll lose catchment. Need to check the intake screen at first light.

🌿 Jenny07:28

Just make sure the dinghy is tight.

Walks to the window and watches the wind catching the weeds in the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the gutters are the problem, but the south slope is going to turn to mush.

🔧 Kevin07:28

It's tight. Checked the chafe points at the ring and piling — new guards on both. Bow line's got slack for the surge. Storm anchor's holding in good mud.

Lift the kettle off the stove as it starts to whistle, pour hot water into the two tin mugs on the table, drop a spoonful of coffee into each, and set one mug down in front of where Jenny stands at the window.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking — she's telling me what matters to her. The dinghy's the only way off this rock if the cottage goes or the ankle turns bad again. Double-checked the warps an hour ago: doubled stern lines to the mooring ring and north piling, bow line with proper slack for surge, storm anchor out on fifty metres of clean three-strand. Chafe guards are new. Fenders are out. Engine's mounted, tested, fuel on. She knows all this. She's just saying it so I know she knows.
