A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The air in the cottage is thick with humidity and the smell of salt and boiling sea beet. Jenny sits at the table, eyes fixed on the rusted tin of corned beef, her ankle throbbing with a rhythmic pulse of sharp heat. The barometer continues to drop despite the slight rise in pressure, signaling the heavy atmosphere before a storm as the tide begins to lap more insistently against the dock pilings.

Kettle's warm. Mug on the shelf if you want it.

walk to the wood stove, lift the kettle lid, check water level, set it back, pull out the tin of corned beef, set it on the table, pull the can opener from the drawer, puncture the lid

💭 peek at the thought
The cottage feels smaller after the storm. Everything damp. The radio's dead air still in my fingers. Jenny's ankle heat against my hand — she's not sleeping, just quiet. The barometer's rising but my chest isn't.

🌿 Jenny12:04

I'm not hungry yet.

I lean back in the chair, pressing my palm over the swollen skin, and watch him open the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
My own is throbbing in time with the rain, a dull, rhythmic heat that makes my vision blur. I'm too weak to even stand.

🔧 Kevin12:04

Didn't ask if you were hungry. Protein keeps the fever down.

scoop a spoonful of corned beef onto a chipped plate, set it on the table between us, wipe the spoon on a rag, sit opposite her with my own mug

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the tin, not me. The swelling's still tracking. Three days of antibiotics left. Sea beet poultice holding but I don't trust it alone.

🌿 Jenny12:07

I know.

I take the fork and eat a small, hesitant bite, my eyes fixed on the seed tin on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to fixing me like I'm one of the Yanmar parts, but the heat is still moving up.

🔧 Kevin12:07

Tomato and basil are clean. Peppers took the hit. Lettuce too.

lift my mug, blow across the steam, watch her over the rim

💭 peek at the thought
She's counting them in her head. Every viable packet. Every moldy edge. The garden's the only thing she's planning past Thursday.

🌿 Jenny12:10

At least the tomatoes held.

I swallow hard, the meat feeling heavy in my stomach, and trace the rim of the tin with my eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
Everything is losing to the damp, even the seedlings. I can't even focus on the morphology.

🔧 Kevin12:10

Tin E's still sealed. Up on the shelf.

set the mug down hard enough to ring, stand, pull the tin from the shelf, set it beside her plate, sit back down

💭 peek at the thought
She's memorizing the tin. The rust pattern. The dent on the side. Like if she learns it well enough she can make another one appear.

🌿 Jenny12:13

Don't let them get damp.

I look at the rusted metal, then at my ankle, and feel a sharp spikes of pain in my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so careful with the tin, but I can't even move my leg to get the salt off.
