The Calm Before the Surge

The tide is rising, pushing water toward the dock, and the grey sky remains heavy with the weight of coming rain.

The warm rain continues in a steady, rhythmic drumming against the cottage roof, keeping the air heavy with the scent of wet earth and salt. The tide is at its peak, water lapping hungrily at the dock pilings, while the barometer continues its slow, uncertain rise, signaling the end of the storm's hold.

The boat isn't coming, Kevin. It never is.

I push a piece of cold corned beef into my mouth and wince as the salt water on my ankle stings.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is coming too high for the dock again, and I'm going to be stuck in this kitchen watching it rise.

Thursday at earliest. Skipper said the bar's breaking six metres.

walk to the window and look out at the dock, checking the waterline on the pilings

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The barometer's still in the basement and the skipper won't cross a breaking bar. We knew that when we signed the contract. But saying it out loud means she's stopped hoping for the easy way out.

Then we hope the north piling holds better than my ankle.

I reach for my sketchbook, my hands shaking as I begin to sketch the way the water is swirling around the debris away from the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
Six metres is a death sentence for the garden wall if the surge hits the south slope.

The wedges are seating. Cedar swells when it's wet — they're tighter now than when I drove them.

pour the last of the coffee into my mug and sit opposite her, keeping the radio in my peripheral vision

💭 peek at the thought
The north piling's a stump held together by oak wedges and stubbornness. Her ankle's held together by sea beet poultice and antibiotics that ran out yesterday. Both are living on borrowed time.
