The Evening Meal

The rain continues to drum on the roof as Kevin and Jenny gather safely inside the cottage as the storm approaches.

The air is heavy and still, the humidity pressing against the skin as the sky thickens into a leaden grey. The tide has retreated, exposing the slick rocks and tide pools of the north shore. Inside the cottage, the smell of drying herbs and medicinal poultice lingers.

Generator's got half a tank. Want me to top it off now while there's still light?

walk to the generator shed

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's steady now. No wind yet — that comes after midnight if the barometer's right. She's watching the gauge like it'll tell her something different than 976. I should check the generator fuel before dark, top the tank if it's low. And the dinghy lines — doubled them yesterday but the chafe guard on the bow line was fraying.

🌿 Jenny22:33

Wait. The light is failing fast and those planks are like ice. Wait for the rain to break.

Jenny winces as she shifts her weight, pulling the seed tin closer to the table.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out there now, he'll slip and break more than just his pride.

🔧 Kevin22:34

Fair enough.

lean against the doorframe, watching the rain fall

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The porch planks go slick as grease in this rain. One wrong step and I'm off the dock or through a window. Generator can wait twenty minutes.

🌿 Jenny22:35

Good.

Jenny opens the rusted tin and carefully inspects the heirloom seeds, checking for any sign of mold or dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's staying put. My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain.

🔧 Kevin22:36

The pepper packet? (quiet) How's it look?

stay by the door, arms crossed, watching the treeline bend

💭 peek at the thought
She's methodical. Always has been. Turns each packet over, checks the seal, the paper. The Cherokee Purple and Brandywine she caught early — mold just at the edges, paper still crisp inside. The pepper packet she's holding now... that one worried me. Thicker seeds, more surface for damp to cling.

🌿 Jenny22:37

Dry. The seal held, but I need to keep them even warmer.

Jenny runs a thumb over the edge of the paper packet, checking for any clumping or rot.

💭 peek at the thought
They're dry for now, but the humidity is a thief. I can't lose this variety.

🔧 Kevin22:38

Stove shelf's warm. Drier than the porch screens.

glance at the wood stove, then back to the rain

💭 peek at the thought
Good. The pepper packet held. That's three varieties clean now — Cherokee Purple, Brandywine, and the pepper. The basil's the only one still questionable. She'll catch it if anything's turned.

🌿 Jenny22:39

Move them there. I'll move the rest of the tin.

Jenny carefully transfers the heirloom seeds to the shelf, shielding them from the draft.

💭 peek at the thought
The stove shelf is better. The air in here is getting too heavy with the salt anyway.
