The Calm Before the Rain

Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof.

The humidity hangs heavy over the cottage as the barometer continues its slow descent toward a storm. Jenny rests inside managing the persistent swelling in her ankle while Kevin checks the weather seals for the upcoming supply boat arrival in two days.

The rain is getting heavy, Kevin. We need to move the tin to the kitchen table before the dripping starts.

Sit up with a wince, rubbing my ankle, and reach for the seed tin on the bench.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if the roof leaks again, grandmother's seeds will rot before they combination see soil.

I've got it. You sit.

pick up the seed tin from the bench and carry it to the kitchen table, setting it down careful

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow tonight. The ankle's worse than she's letting on. I'll take the tin — save her the weight and the bend.

🌿 Jenny22:43

Just make sure it's away from the wall. The humidity is already rising.

Lean back against the pillow, watching him place the tin while the rain starts to roar on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always trying to be helpful, but I'm the one who knows exactly howization these seeds are.

Middle of the table. Away from everything.

set the tin square in the centre of the kitchen table, then pull out the other chair and sit, boots still damp, listening to the rain hammer the roof

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wall. Damp creeps up cold stone faster than you'd think. Middle of the table's best — air all round.

🌿 Jenny22:45

It's going to be a long night. The barometer is screaming.

Reach out and touch the rusted metal of the tin, feeling for any condensation on the surface.

💭 peek at the thought
If the roof holds, I can check the moisture levels tomorrow, but I'm too tired to even move.

🔧 Kevin22:45

Desiccant packs were fresh Monday. But I'll crack it at first light, make sure.

reach over and brush a thumb along the tin's lid seam, feeling for moisture, then pull my hand back and let the silence stretch while the rain hammers down

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. 975 and falling. This one's got teeth. The tin's cold — good sign, seal's holding. But I should check the desiccant packs we put in last week. If they're spent, we've got trouble before morning.
