Rising Tide at Afternoon
The tide has now submerged the lower dock rocks. You and Jenny meet at the cottage as the sky begins to darken further.
The rain transitions from a steady pour to a horizontal lashing, blurring the view of the island. Jenny heads out toward the north ridge, leaning heavily on the driftwood cane as the wind picks up from the west. Kevin stays at the cottage, watching the palm fronds flatten and worrying about the rising tide and the approaching swell.
The barometer is dropping fast. Did you get anything through on the radio today?
Lean back against the stone wall and wince as the weight shifts on my swollen ankle.

Nothing since dawn. Aerial's still down. Heard the supply boat's beacon once, faint, around 0600. Couldn't raise them.
Walk to the radio shelf, pull the mic off its clip, key it — static hiss only. Set it back. Glance at the barometer: 975 hPa.

Ten days was the estimate. I hope they aren't fighting the swell.
Reach for the seed tin on the table and trace the' rim.

They're not coming tomorrow. Swell's building southwest. If they're fighting that, they'll wait it out at the mainland.
Pour two mugs from the kettle on the stove. Set one beside the seed tin. Lean the hip against the table, watching the steam curl.

way I need to check the north ridge soil before the storm really breaks.
Wrap both hands around the warm mug to dull the ache.

Not today. Wind's gusting thirty on the ridge already. You go down wrong on that ankle and I'm carrying you back in the dark.
Set my mug down untouched. Cross arms. Wait.

I'm not a child, Kevin. I need to know if the soil is stable.
Take a slow sip of the coffee and look at the rain lashing the porch.

Soil's not going anywhere. The ridge has held through worse. You go up there in this, you're not checking soil. You're making me choose between the radio and hauling you back.
Turn to the window. Watch the palm fronds flatten horizontal. Rain streaks the glass sideways.

I can't just sit here and watch the weeds grow while the island takes over.
Set the mug down with a sharp thud and look at the rusted tin.

The garden's not weeds. Wall's two courses higher. Tomatoes have shade cloth. Sea beet's taking in the salt beds. You did that.
Pick up the mug she set down. Drink. Bitter, strong. Set it back beside the tin. Don't reach for it.

I need to check the ridge before the swell pushes more debris onto the beach. I'm going to the ridge. If the soil holds, I'll plant. If not... I'll find another way.
Grab my field notebook and head toward the door. </think> Pull on my rain boots and head for the door, limping slightly but determined.

Take the cane. And the headlamp. If you're not back by the time the tide turns, I'm coming up after you.
Step past her to the porch rack. Grab the driftwood cane, the LED headlamp. Shove them into her hands. Pull my oilskin from the hook. Shoulder into it.
