← Day 655

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the hilltop

Midday Heat and Humidity

Kevin is at the dock while Jenny is on the north ridge.

Kevin spends the midday checking the dock integrity and the Yanmar engine's vibration after the recent repairs. Jenny focuses on the garden, documenting the sea beet morphology while monitoring her healing ankle in the stifling heat.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You inspect the salt-crust on hardware for signs of stress fractures.

🔧 Kevin01:02

Kevin — crack the Yanmar mounting bolts loose one by one with the 19mm wrench, inspect each shank and thread for stress fractures or stretching, then retorque to spec.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt crust on the Yanmar's mounting bolts is thick — white bloom over rust. If the vibration's coming from the block itself, these bolts will show the stress first. Hairline fractures at the shank, stretched threads. I need to crack them loose and look.

🔧 Kevin01:08

Kevin — set the stretched bolt aside. Check the workshop for a spare 12mm hardened mounting bolt. If none, measure the hole for oversize tap.

💭 peek at the thought
Three bolts came clean. The fourth — aft starboard — the threads are galled. The bolt stretched. Micrometer shows 0.3mm elongation on the shank. That's the vibration source, or part of it. The block's moving under load because that mount isn't holding. Need a new bolt, hardened, and maybe a thicker washer to spread the load. Or drill and tap oversize if the hole's wallowed.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the hilltop

You find a patch of shade under a rock overhang to protect your damp notebook.

🌿 Jenny01:01

Stay still, Jenny. Just stay still.

Open the notebook and sketch the detailed morphology of the sea beet found near the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the heat, and I need to finish this sketch before the weather actually breaks.

🌿 Jenny01:07

Come on, move it.

Pack the notebook and pencils away and start the slow descent back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The clouds are bruising the horizon now; that storm is coming in faster than the radio said.
