The Height of the Storm

The rain turns into a relentless drumming on the roof. You and Jenny are together by the fire, listening to the wind rattle the shutters as you wait for the morning to come.

The rain lashes against the cottage walls with a heavy, rhythmic drumming that drowns out the distant surf. Inside, the air is thick with the smell of damp earth and drying herbs as the barometer continues its steady descent, signaling that the storm front is closing in.

Coffee's still hot if you want it.

pour coffee from the pot on the stove into a tin mug, hold it out to her

💭 peek at the thought
The rain on the roof sounds like the Bay of Biscay — forty minutes in black water, the ship's lights receding. My chest tightens the same way. Jenny's here though. Warm. Alive. The fire cracks and the shutters hold. I'm not out there. I'm here because I choose to be.

🌿 Jenny05:13

Thanks.

Take the mug, wrapping both hands around the warmth of the metal.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind shifts any more, the north slope will be a landslide before I even start.

Ankle bad tonight?

sit back on my heels beside the fire, cradling my own mug, watching the flames rather than her face

💭 peek at the thought
She takes it like it's something precious. Just a tin mug of coffee. Her fingers are cold against the metal. The ankle's swollen again — I saw her wince when she shifted on the floor. She won't say it hurts.

🌿 Jenny05:15

It's fine.

Take a slow sip of the coffee, eyes fixed on the shadows dancing on the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
It's throbbing in time with the rain, but I can manage it.

🔧 Kevin05:17

Mm.

reach over and brush the back of my fingers lightly against her ankle where it rests on the cushion — testing heat, not asking permission

💭 peek at the thought
"It's fine" means it's not fine. She's been making that poultice every day — sea beet, mint, honey when we had it. The red line retreated but the swelling comes back each evening. The antibiotics are done. I should check it again before sleep. But she'll wave me off.

🌿 Jenny05:17

It's just tired.

Shift my leg away slightly, pulling the blanket tighter around my knees.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking for a crack in the armor to try and fix.
